About the role

The Laborer position at San Francisco State University is a one-year probationary position. It is full-time (1.0 FTE) with a work schedule of Monday-Friday from 4:30 am - 12:30 pm. The anticipated hiring range is $3,461.000 - $3673.00 per month ($41,532.00 - $44,076.00 annually), with salary commensurate with experience.

This position is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. This position may be a designated position in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate must be able to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Responsibilities

• Cleaning and hardscape maintenance on grounds, parking structures, and roads.
• Performing general cleaning of all campus outdoor areas: cleaning drains, sweeping, picking up bulking debris and vegetation, washing trash cans, removing graffiti, tape, stains, posters, etc.
• Pressure washing walkways and parking structures.
• Maintaining all entryways, campus furniture, and signage in an exceptionally clean condition.
• Operating a variety of vehicles (tractor, street sweeper, forklift, utility carts, trucks, etc.) safely in the performance of duties.
• Performing operator safety checks and maintenance.
• Operating power blowers.
• Using other tools and equipment as necessary to ensure cleanliness of outdoor campus areas.
• Installing and maintaining asphalt, concrete, pavers, etc. with repair patches, sealers, etc.
• Cleaning catch basins and drains on the grounds.
• Constructing and maintaining trash enclosures and other fences, maintaining signs, etc.
• Aiding Grounds landscape staff in grounds work and tree care operations.
• Assisting in the moving of furniture and equipment, tents and mats and other requested items for the University events.
• Cleaning restrooms, stairwells, conference rooms, offices, restaurant seating areas.
• Stripping and waxing floors and cleaning carpets.

Requirements

• Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; perform regular strenuous manual labor; and safely move heavy items in excess of 50 pounds.
• Licenses: Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver’s license.
• Knowledge of the common terminology, methods, practices, tools, chemicals, and procedures related to laborer activities.
• Knowledge of safety standards, sanitation measures, and ergonomics appropriate for physical labor.
• Ability to perform a variety of laborer tasks and operate tools and equipment, including motor vehicles, tractor, forklift, street sweeper, power washer, concrete mixer, grinder, leaf blower, and manual/power tools.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, perceive locations on maps, and read and write at a level appropriate for training and work instructions (e.g., safety warnings, dispatch instructions, task lists, conditional instructions).
• Ability to learn and apply care in handling laborer supplies and equipment, observe safe working practices, and adapt to new job assignments as circumstances change.
• Experience working in public higher education.
• Possession of valid Forklift operator certification.
• Possession of Defensive Driver certification.
