About the Role
Perform quality testing procedures in accordance with ISTA, AOSA, and sampling guidelines, and assess testing requirements according to established guidelines. Verify and record quality test results with consistent attention to detail. Maintain a clean, healthy, and safe working environment in compliance with Safety and Health guidelines and housekeeping practices. Assist in monitoring the proper functioning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Candidates will plant and evaluate corn, soybean, and sorghum seeds. No prior testing experience is required; all training will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Perform standard germination tests on seed (corn, wheat, soy, sorghum) by rolling dozens of seeds on paper towel and wax paper, placing them into a germinator, reviewing seedling quality (live, dead, abnormal), and entering findings into a tablet.
- Monitor product for quality assurance and ensure activities meet the requirements of the Quality Plan.
- Actively seek to reduce redundant and unnecessary testing.
- Recommend and implement measures to improve productivity, performance, methods, troubleshoot issues, and identify quality defects.
- Develop and maintain good communication and rapport with site personnel.
- Train on cross-functional tasks in other laboratory functions to provide additional support during high volume or critical periods.
- Perform all duties with a high level of accuracy to maintain the integrity of quality results.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Strong attention to detail (evaluating 50-400 seeds at a time for abnormalities).
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new processes.
- Dependability and professionalism.
- Reliable transportation.
- Willingness and ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Comfort with repetitive, detail-oriented work following established procedures.
- Must be willing to work overtime and some weekends if necessary.
- Attendance during training period is critical; avoid scheduling time off.
- During peak season, extended weekday hours are mandatory; Saturday is encouraged (incentives available).
Skills
- Entry-level computer skills.
- Experience in operations, quality, manufacturing, laboratory support, agriculture, or other hands-on roles is preferred.
- Detail-oriented with a history of transactional excellence and accuracy.
Schedule
- Duration: 5-month contract (July–December).
- Weekly schedule: 40 hours + overtime.
- Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (day shift until October).
- Ideally work 8 hours/day; may work 10 hours/day from July–December.
- High-energy lab environment with 30–50 workers; tasks may involve sitting and/or standing for long periods with some repetitive motions.
Training & Incentives
- Training includes learning planting techniques and machines, followed by approximately 15 hours of seedling evaluation.
- Training incentive: Complete evaluation of commercial corn, planting corn, and soybeans without direct supervision. Goal: 65 reps/hour for all crops trained on within three weeks of training completion.
- Performance bonuses:
- Weekly bonus for averaging 65+ reps/hour on cold corn evaluation with zero errors (August 10 – September 11).
- Weekly bonus for averaging 80+ reps/hour on warm corn evaluation with zero errors (October 1 – November 7).
- Attendance bonus (Peak Incentive):
- Timeframe: September 28 – November 6.
- Eligibility: Work the entire week with no attendance occurrences (late, leaving early, absence, etc.).
- Overall attendance bonus: Work all overtime and Saturdays during peak time with zero absences to qualify for an extra one-time bonus.
