Laboratory Manager

About the role

Marathon Petroleum Company has an opening for a Laboratory Manager at its refinery in Anacortes, WA. This position is located in the Products Control organization and reports to the Products Control Director. The role manages the Lab Supervisor and Refining Chemists, overseeing overall laboratory operations aligned with refinery goals in a safe, environmentally sound, and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

• Ensure personal and process safety and environmental stewardship for the Laboratory; promote adherence to HES and Laboratory policies, programs, procedures, regulations, and work instructions.
• Champion site product quality program and drive a culture of continuous improvement including quality incident elimination.
• Assure accurate, timely data for product quality control and other testing and chemical analyses services for the division.
• Drive culture of production-centered organization through communication and collaboration with all other business units to effectively execute site objectives.
• Develop and sustain culture of high performance and accountability by setting expectations, organizing, planning, and leading team activities.
• Identify and pursue opportunities for personal and team development to meet business and career objectives; provide coaching, mentoring, and constructive feedback to Laboratory Team members.
• Align Laboratory organization’s efforts to maximize reliability and availability of Laboratory equipment through proactive identification of issues, defect elimination, and preventative maintenance.
• Manage testing equipment issues which can impact facility production.
• Develop and manage Laboratory Team budget to support safe and reliable operations and future equipment needs.
• Responsible for site Statistical Quality Control and Data Defensibility Programs, Quality Assurance audits, and improvement implementation.
• Embrace continuous learning and collaborate with corporate SMEs on new products, standards, and test methods in the refining chemical field.
• Participate in application and development of programs to ensure all products meet required specifications and maximize economic opportunity for the refinery.
• Assist other departments outside Refining in matters of a technical nature regarding oversight and specification testing; assist in handling end-user issues regarding product quality or performance.

Qualifications

Minimum

• High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Analytical Science preferred.
• Seven (7) or more years of relevant experience.
• Able to work off-hour duties such as plant shutdowns and routine on-call support.
• Valid driver’s license required.

Preferred

• Ten (10) or more years of QC/production laboratory experience in petroleum refining or petrochemical industries.
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Database applications.
• Experience with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) applications.
• Demonstrated knowledge of chemical composition, structure, properties, and reactions of substances.
• Understanding of how analytes relate to the refining process.

Pay

Salary range: $141,300.00 – $212,000.00 (Salary Grade 13).

Schedule

Full-time, regular position. Requires ability to work off-hour duties including plant shutdowns and routine on-call support.
