Laboratory Assistant Senior

About the Role

Under direct supervision, performs clinical laboratory procedures and tests using manual and automated equipment. Maintains required records and data, assists laboratory technicians and medical technologists, and supports compliance with organizational principles and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Obtains laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, and sputum directly from patients.
• Uses centrifuges to separate plasma or serum from whole blood.
• Checks specimen acceptability for testing, labels, distributes, and stores samples appropriately.
• Measures/weighs appropriate samples and provides information to technicians and technologists for further testing.
• Maintains and operates laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, refrigerators, and freezers; keeps Quality Control Maintenance Charts.
• Prepares bacteriological specimens on culture media and smears for staining.
• Performs data input via computer CRT/keyboard.
• Handles inquiries on laboratory specimen requirements and maintains detailed records of all tests performed.
• Reports laboratory findings to authorized persons.
• Assists in transporting items between laboratory, clinic, and hospital locations.
• Maintains packing/shipping training and certification for compliance with applicable regulations.
• Performs authorized (e.g., CLIA waived) tests in serology, hematology, chemistry, microbiology, histology, and cytology using standard techniques and equipment.
• Performs Bleeding Time Test under direct supervision.
• Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
• Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Maintains laboratory stock of supplies and chemicals.
• Keeps work area neat and clean.
• Demonstrates principles of service excellence and maintains customer focus.
• Provides care/service appropriate to age groups served and demonstrates culturally sensitive care.
• Adheres to Principles of Responsibility, applicable laws, regulations, and policies; reports/resolves non-compliance issues.
• Cooperates with staff within and outside the department to accomplish job duties and assist others.
• Serves as a team player and role model, exhibiting traits of courtesy, helpfulness, and respect.
• Conducts self in a service-oriented manner, attentive and respectful when dealing with members, visitors, and employees.
• Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned.

Requirements

• Six (6) months of experience in a clinical laboratory setting with some phlebotomy experience.
• High School Diploma.
• Heartsaver CPR AED certification within 6 months of hire from the American Heart Association.
• Demonstrated skills in specimen processing.
• Ability to communicate effectively (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English).
• Mathematical ability, attention to detail, organization, prioritization, and proofing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• One (1) year as Lab Assistant II or similar position.
• Experience in a wide range of age-related phlebotomy areas (e.g., newborn, pediatric, geriatric).
• Knowledge of and skill in word processing, spreadsheet, and database PC applications.
• Certified Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomist (CLPlb) by the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, Inc. (NCA).
• Certified Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
• Post-high school training/education with an emphasis in science (e.g., biology, chemistry).
• Phlebotomy training.

Schedule

• Part-time, 20 hours per week.
• Shift: Day, Monday through Friday.
• Working Hours: 08:00 AM – 05:00 PM.

Pay

$26.74 - $29.71 per hour.

Location & Travel

• Primary Location: Kona Medical Offices, Kailua Kona, Hawaii.
• Travel: Yes, 50% of the time.
• Work Setting: Onsite.
