Lab Technician, Pathology

About the Role

This Lab Technician position is within the research group of Dr. Matthew McCord in the Department of Pathology, School of Medicine at the University of Virginia. The group currently shares space with Dr. Roger Abounader’s laboratory and collaborates closely with his team. The focus of Dr. McCord’s research is studying the molecular and genetic basis of innate and acquired therapy resistance in brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma, and identifying strategies to overcome resistance.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced research environment.

Responsibilities

• Cell culture
• CRISPR gene editing
• siRNA gene suppression
• Nucleic acid and protein extraction
• Immunoblots
• PCR
• Preparing samples for DNA and RNA sequencing
• Flow cytometry
• Mouse procedures and care, including data analysis

Previous experience in these or related areas is welcome, but extensive training will be provided upon hiring.

Requirements

Education: Associate's degree required; may accept an equivalent combination of experience, education, or certification in lieu of a degree.

Experience: Two or more years of lab experience, which may include student experience.

Physical Demands: This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. It also involves keyboarding, bench work, and fine finger manipulation for animal procedures.

Pay

$20 - $24/hour, commensurate with education and experience.

Schedule

This is a full-time, non-exempt-level position with standard benefits. The role is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site. This is a restricted position dependent on the continuation of available funding.
