About the role

Pre-Analytical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for preparing samples for analysis, recording, and/or verifying patient's information. This role primarily performs duties related to accessioning, sample management, problem resolution, data entry, and specimen storage with a high degree of proficiency. A successful candidate will have knowledge of lab procedures and understand the importance of following all lab regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory tasks, as assigned.
  • Clean and organize common lab areas and take responsibility for all housekeeping tasks being completed on time.
  • Receive, sort, and unpack incoming samples regularly.
  • Unpack, log, and track incoming samples using specified software.
  • Perform administrative duties required for incoming samples, including scanning needed paperwork such as pathology reports and requisitions, and filing physical paperwork per required procedures.
  • Perform order entry and order processing, including reviewing patient demographics and sample collection.
  • Evaluate insurance and verify billing information.
  • Transcribe relevant medical information from pathology reports or other associated documents such as sample IDs, number of malignant cores, and tumor size.
  • Perform sample accessioning, including verification of patient demographics, sample ID, and sample labeling.
  • Utilize Laboratory Information System (LIMS) to review, enter sample information, and print required work lists.
  • Perform and record equipment maintenance.
  • Follow established health and safety procedures and adhere to risk assessments.
  • Comply with ISO 15189 and QMS.
  • Record data adhering to GDP, strictly follow procedures, and raise quality events when necessary.
  • Maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) under guided direction of leadership.
  • Participate in process improvement activities planned by management and/or engineers.
  • Contribute to overall team goals while maintaining individual output.
  • Foresee issues and overcome obstacles to completing tasks or assignments.
  • Perform all assigned tasks under the supervision of a designee.
  • Perform timely and accurate data entry and verification of incoming orders and samples according to SOP.
  • Assist management in triaging workflow issues.
  • Integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner.
  • Prioritize and drive results with a high emphasis on quality.

  • Work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 85% of a typical working day.
  • Work seated for approximately 75% of a typical workday and standing for approximately 25% of a typical workday.
  • Lift up to 10 pounds for approximately 10% of a typical workday.
  • Grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Use various types of laboratory equipment, including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • Perform repetitious actions using office or lab tools.
  • Use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • Travel between Redwood City locations as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Basic computer skills, including email usage.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Science, Health Science, or related field.
  • Experience in healthcare, laboratory, pharmaceutical industry, or other regulated work environment.
  • Experience with high-volume laboratory operations.
  • Experience with using laboratory information management systems.
  • Excellent listening, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and update procedures.
