About the role

The Laboratory Support Technician (LST III) is part of the provider care team, acting in a support capacity for reports, data, and scheduling functions of the laboratory. This position is responsible for the accurate, timely, and effective provision of laboratory support mechanisms, exhibiting excellent customer service skills in line with the Mercy Signature Service Standards.

The LST III is responsible for the skillful acquisition of all required types of specimens for laboratory testing utilizing safe, accurate, effective, and professional methodologies while observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies. The role includes processing, transport, and referral of all types of laboratory specimens and reports, performing limited laboratory testing, and assisting technologists in appropriate test methods.

Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with Mercy’s mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate, timely, and effective laboratory support for reports, data, and scheduling functions.
  • Acquire all required types of specimens for laboratory testing using safe, accurate, and professional methodologies while adhering to HIPAA and lab policies.
  • Process, transport, and refer all types of laboratory specimens and reports as required.
  • Perform limited laboratory testing and assist technologists in appropriate test methods.
  • Exhibit excellent customer service skills in all interactions, aligning with Mercy Signature Service Standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • One year of phlebotomy or clinical laboratory experience (required).
  • Previous Mercy LST II designation or equivalent experience (required).
  • Satisfactorily complete facility-specific competencies (e.g., checklists, written examinations, management observations) to advance to higher job descriptions.
  • No active disciplinary actions or performance improvement plans.
  • Successfully complete the probationary period.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College-level coursework in Chemistry, Biology, or other sciences.
  • Phlebotomy preceptor experience.
