About the role
The Kitchen Assistant assists the cooks and Food Service Director in the kitchen and dining halls, ensuring cleanliness and efficient operations.
Responsibilities
- Works as part of a team to maintain clean and hygienic food preparation areas.
- Prepares cruiser cars with necessary dishes, silverware, trays, and sets up dining halls for meals.
- Assists in food preparation, including salad preparation and items for the salad bar, condiments, bread, butter, juice, water, milk, desserts, and other required items.
- Serves food from the serving counter, placing all necessary items for consumption.
- Cleans up serving areas after meals, sanitizing, scrubbing counters, bringing in dirty dish racks, silverware and buckets, unused dishes, sweeping and mopping serving areas, and disposing of garbage.
- Operates dish machines and sinks according to procedures and follows state health codes when handling food.
- May assist with unloading shipments of food and supplies as needed.
- Daily and weekly cleaning as assigned, ensuring kitchen, dining, and storage areas are safe, clean, and orderly.
Requirements
- High School Diploma, college credits/degree in Education preferred.
- Basic understanding of food preparation, culinary arts, kitchen equipment, and hygienic processes.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels.
- Ability to problem-solve and take initiative that aligns with the YMCA's mission and goals.
- Ability to work as part of a team, act as a role model, and identify potential risk factors.
- First-Aid, CPR, and AED certifications may be required.
Qualifications
- Possesses the physical capability to be on their feet for long periods and move about the kitchen easily and quickly.
- Capable of bending, kneeling, squatting, and lifting up to 30 pounds.
- Able to use kitchen equipment safely and operate electrical and mechanical equipment.
- Able to hear whistles or alarms.
