About the role
The Housing Coordinator at Atlas House Men’s Shelter plays a crucial role in helping clients secure permanent housing. Located in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, the shelter provides comprehensive services including case management, counseling, recreational activities, and housing placement assistance.
Responsibilities
- Identifies housing options for clients and assists in preparing and submitting applications to housing providers.
- Reviews and submits housing application packages to ensure completeness and eligibility.
- Follows up on submitted applications and conducts weekly individual and group meetings to address housing placement issues.
- Visits housing provider facilities to build relationships and gather information for clients.
- Coordinates housing interviews, conducts mock interviews, and accompanies clients during tours.
- Escorts clients for housing placement interviews using public transportation.
- Maintains and updates the tracking system for applications, interviews, and selections/denials.
- Attends monthly PFP case management conferences and conducts weekly housing workshops.
- Assists clients with moving into their units as needed.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience working with homeless adults with substance and illicit drug abuse issues.
- Knowledge of low-income housing in New York City and special needs housing, including CAPS Supportive Housing Application System.
- Excellent oral, written, and listening skills.
- Ability to work independently and initiate corrective actions to assist clients in securing permanent housing.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interface with clients and staff.
- Proficiency in case management software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
