About the Role

Kent is seeking a Junior Surveyor to join our team in Deer Park, TX, supporting Baytown, TX operations and regional project site(s). As the Junior Surveyor, you will perform survey work as part of a field survey crew, including assisting the Instrument Man with measuring in the field, maintaining equipment, and cleaning up the work site and vehicles. You will receive technical direction from both the Survey Party Chief and the Instrument Man when instructed by the Survey Party Chief in the field. The Survey Coordinator, who reports to the C/S Department Manager, will serve as your supervisor.

Responsibilities

Before fieldwork:

• Participate in daily toolbox meetings.
• Supply the Survey Party Chief with information to maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Daily inspect all tools before use. Tag all equipment if found in a condition not suitable for use or in need of repair, denote on tag, and inform the Survey Party Chief. Then remove from work vehicle.
• Assist the Instrument Man in testing survey instruments and auto-level after returning from maintenance work or calibration.

During fieldwork:

• Regulate work to ensure all site safety standards, work practices, and guidelines are adhered to.
• Communicate any safety issues, regardless of severity, to the Survey Party Chief.
• Receive ExxonMobil Work Permit or approval to begin field survey work when requested by the Survey Party Chief.
• Communicate data collection issues to the Survey Party Chief.
• Responsible for sufficient adherence to GL-10-07-0 Error Reduction Process.
• Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality seamless customer service.
• Walk the job down with the Survey Crew and Survey Requestor.
• Assist the Instrument Man in operating various survey-engineering instruments to measure distances and collect data; make cross-section, profile, location, topographic, and construction layout surveys.
• Assist in establishing lines, critical points, and angles; dig ground using a shovel and other hand tools to search for and locate survey monuments and points.
• Set, clean, and paint all points used for survey purposes.
• Frequently walk up and down steep slopes, ditches, or rough and uneven surfaces such as sloping terrain, plowed or furrowed areas, or construction sites; stoop, bend, reach, lift, and carry items up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.
• Ascend/descend multiple flights of stairs, climb in areas that require the use of fall protection.
• Maintain field notes regarding backsight and foresight heights for each setup.

After fieldwork:

• Clean the work site of all materials and equipment.
• Organize all materials and equipment.
• Restock the vehicle with supplies as required.
• Clean the work vehicle, including emptying trash, and take the vehicle to be washed and vacuumed.
• Refuel vehicles as required without interfering with fieldwork.
• Sort, file, shelve, and handle documents, books, files, and related materials required for clerical operations.

In addition to the responsibilities listed, you may be required to perform other ad-hoc tasks as needed or directed by your supervisor or management. These tasks will be within the reasonable scope of your skills, capabilities, and role within the organization. The intent is to allow flexibility in meeting the dynamic needs of the organization while considering your current workload and professional development.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, GED, or higher education is a plus.
• 0-3 years of experience.
• Ability to integrate new tools and techniques into existing workflows to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
• Base knowledge of surveying.
• Ability to complete required BASIC and site-specific safety training as necessary.
• TWIC required.

Skills

• Excellent command of the English language in both oral and written communication.
• Basic knowledge of engineering concepts and ability to apply knowledge to complex problems.
• Computer skills and application of software programs.
• Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
• Ability to develop effective planning, project, and organizational skills.
