Journeyman – Locks & Doors

About the role

The employee will supervise a varying number of employees in the overall direction, coordination, and completion of tasks as assigned, working in close relation to peers and all other Mid-Del employees.

Qualifications

• Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
• High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Must clear all necessary criminal and vehicular background checks
• Must possess and maintain a current Oklahoma license for motor vehicles
• Must maintain confidential information of sensitive nature
• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience (combined) in the area of locks and doors as a locksmith
• Currently licensed and in good standing as a Locksmith Technician through the Oklahoma Department of Labor

Responsibilities

• Function as a working Locks and Doors Journeyman and coordinate department efforts through communication and planning with fellow Journeyman, Foreman, and Apprentices
• Work in confined spaces above, below, and at ground level
• Work in aerial bucket ladder or catwalk at a height not to exceed 110 feet
• Apply International and BOCA Building Codes, and all applicable state and local codes related to Locks & Doors
• Communicate and consult with faculty and staff to explain methods and procedures related to keying databases and locksmith operations
• Consult with administrators, contractors, architects, project managers, and engineers on new construction and remodel projects
• Generate and maintain computerized databases to minimize duplication of master key systems through tracking and cataloging of keys; maintain records and security files
• Maintain keying systems codes and spreadsheets for the Locks and Doors department
• Train administrators, faculty, and staff on policies, procedures, management, and use of Schlage Everest T restricted keying system for the District
• Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of door hardware, locks, and framework
• Maintain an annual written log of all fire doors in the District to comply with NFPA 101 Life Safety and Fire Codes and assure compliance with all State and Local jurisdictions
• Interpret blueprints and representative drawings of buildings
• Operate various software programs including word processors and spreadsheets
• Work in close relationship with the Director of Maintenance and Construction, Supervisor of Maintenance and Construction, and Carpentry Foreman in budgeting, maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical equipment
• Assist in coordinated planning, designing, and installation of new construction and/or remodel projects
• Have general knowledge of all purchases made from vendor accounts assigned to the Locks/Doors sections
• Secure price quotes on projects being considered and assemble these quotes in a format understandable by administrators
• Review detailed inventory accounts from all Locks/Doors personnel prior to their being submitted yearly
• Become knowledgeable in the Mid-Del Schools Confined Spaces Program and coordinate its proper application in the entire Locks & Doors section
• Become knowledgeable in the Mid-Del Schools Lockout/Tagout Program and coordinate its proper application
• Issue Key Codes for all new and used construction projects
• Keep all sites informed of changes in key code policies and ensure understanding of new key coding systems
• Maintain the integrity of all keying systems and their intent as instructed by the Director of Maintenance & Construction, the Supervisor of Maintenance & Construction, and the Carpentry Foreman
• Provide Director/Supervisor/Foreman with pertinent information on the status of the District keying system
• Perform installation, repair, rebuilding, and service/maintenance of mechanical and/or electric locking devices
• Disassemble locks including padlocks, safe locks, and door locks; repair or replace worn tumblers, springs, and other parts as necessary
• Occasionally move lock pick cylinder to open door locks without keys and open safes by drilling

Skills

• Proficiency in International and BOCA Building Codes and applicable state and local codes
• Ability to interpret blueprints and representative drawings
• Proficiency in operating word processors and spreadsheets
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
• Ability to compose and write grammatically correct correspondence and memos
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables
• Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule, or blueprint form

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to more than 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fume or airborne particles. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, extreme cold (including outdoors), extreme heat (including direct sunlight), risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment will vary from somewhat loud to extremely loud.
