IoT Architect | Jobs In US
We are a talent acquisition and staff augmentation firm hiring on behalf of a client in the energy and utilities technology space. This is a fully remote opportunity available across multiple U.S. locations, offered on a full-time, part-time, or contractual basis based on candidate preference and eligibility.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced IoT Architect to define the overall architecture and design of IoT systems, covering hardware, software, networks, and data storage. In this role, you will evaluate IoT technologies and protocols, build in security and scalability, and shape how devices, edge computing, and the cloud work together to turn IoT data into actionable insights.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architectural design of IoT ecosystems, integrating devices, software, networks, and data infrastructure to support secure, scalable, and interoperable solutions.
- Identify and evaluate IoT technologies, protocols, and platforms that best fit project or organizational requirements, including sensors, communication protocols (e.g., MQTT, CoAP), cloud services, and edge computing solutions.
- Design and implement comprehensive IoT security frameworks to safeguard devices, data, and communication networks, incorporating privacy controls, authentication, authorization, access management, and secure device lifecycle practices.
- Establish effective strategies for collecting, storing, processing, and managing IoT-generated data, enabling efficient analysis and conversion of data into meaningful, actionable business insights.
- Ensure IoT devices and systems can communicate and work seamlessly with each other regardless of manufacturer or technology, promoting industry standards and open protocols.
- Design IoT systems to be scalable, supporting the addition of more devices and increased data volume as deployments grow.
- Incorporate edge computing principles where needed to process data closer to the source, reducing latency and enhancing real-time decision-making.
- Determine the role of cloud computing in the IoT ecosystem, and select and integrate cloud services for data storage, analytics, and remote device management.
- Develop prototypes and conduct testing to validate the feasibility and functionality of IoT solutions, iteratively refining designs based on test results.
Requirements
- Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a comparable field.
- Demonstrated experience architecting IoT systems in a professional setting.
- Strong background in IoT system architecture, spanning hardware, software, networking, and data layers.
- Hands-on experience evaluating and selecting IoT communication protocols such as MQTT and CoAP.
- Solid understanding of cloud platforms and how they integrate into IoT ecosystems for storage, analytics, and device management.
- Experience designing and implementing edge computing solutions for real-time processing.
- Strong grasp of IoT security practices, including authentication, access control, and device management.
- Ability to build scalable, interoperable systems aligned with industry standards and open protocols.
- Experience taking IoT solutions from prototype through testing and iterative refinement.
- Track record of designing systems that scale smoothly as device counts and data volumes grow.
- Familiarity with maintaining security and compliance across distributed IoT deployments.
Skills
- Familiarity with applying AI/ML models at the edge or in the cloud to derive insights from IoT-generated data is a plus.
- Comfort using AI-assisted tools to support design documentation or prototyping, though not mandatory.
- Comfortable guiding cross-functional teams through architectural decisions during system design and prototyping (managerial experience not required).
Qualifications
Relevant IoT, cloud, or security architecture certifications (e.g., AWS/Azure IoT certifications) are a plus, though not mandatory.
