Department: Interpreter Language Services | FTE: 1.00 Full Time | Shift: Days
About the role
Provide accurate medical written translation and verbal interpretation. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.
Responsibilities
- Deliver quality service and act positively with all customers to complete assigned functions; identify, recommend, and implement opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Verbally interpret into proper medical terminology in a medical setting using a variety of techniques.
- Adhere to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct for ASL interpreters.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality as per hospital and department policies.
- Assist in patient follow-up as necessary, including contacting patients for appointment reminders.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and hospital employees.
- Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings, and workshops.
- Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve it through questioning current policies and processes.
- Identify and report or correct environmental conditions and situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
- Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and near misses in a timely manner.
- Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations they don’t understand or may seem incorrect.
- Assist in written translation of medical information for internal and external customers.
- Translate patient education information in written form as requested.
- May be required to perform on-call duties.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Education specialization: UNMH Inter/Translator Med Qual-Adv High or Superior Score on the Medical Interpreter Qualification Test within 90 days, or Bridge the GAP Interpreter/Translator, or equivalent UNMH Medical Interpreter Training, or other Translator Certification.
- 1 year of directly related experience.
Physical Conditions
- Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements exceed those for Sedentary Work.
- May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls.
- May require working at a production rate pace entailing constant pushing and/or pulling of materials, even if the weight is negligible.
- Working conditions: Minor hazard—physical risks, dirt, dust, fumes, noise.
- Tuberculosis testing completed upon hire and as required thereafter.
- Ineligible for interpreter stipend.
