The Rescue Mission’s Volunteer Services team has an unpaid internship opportunity for individuals interested in nonprofit work, volunteer management, community engagement, or event coordination. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in nonprofit administration, volunteer coordination, community engagement, and event planning.

About the Rescue Mission

The Rescue Mission Alliance strives to share hope, end hunger and homelessness, change lives, and strengthen communities one person at a time. We operate in the communities of Syracuse, Auburn, and Binghamton with programs tailored to each community.

Responsibilities

  • Answering the holiday phone line, including recording meal orders, gift donations, and volunteer registrations
  • Assisting with processing volunteer applications
  • Maintaining volunteer sign-up lists for holiday events
  • Assisting with holiday client gift preparation
  • Delivering items to programs on the main campus
  • Sorting and organizing donations received
  • Assisting with inventory of holiday supplies
  • Interacting with volunteers and helping support volunteer events
  • Providing general administrative support to the Volunteer Services department
  • Supporting the Rescue Mission’s mission, values, and safety expectations

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Current college student preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional time management skills
  • Computer knowledge required, especially Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Flexible and able to multitask
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Customer service oriented and comfortable interacting with volunteers, donors, staff, and the public
  • Passion for the mission and vision of the organization
  • Sensitivity and compassion toward those served by the organization, including individuals experiencing homelessness or other barriers
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Schedule

This internship is available from late September through the end of the semester, with the possibility of extending through December based on department need and intern availability. Administrative hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The schedule is flexible within those administrative hours.

This is an unpaid Volunteer Services internship opportunity.
