Internal Audit Intern
About the Role
This Summer Intern position within the Internal Audit department offers hands-on experience in the Internal Audit profession. The intern will work closely with the Internal Audit Manager, assisting with key initiatives across the company and gaining exposure to basic audit functions in the financial services industry.
Responsibilities
- Learn about SOX controls included in the financial reporting process under the direction of the Internal Audit Manager.
- Understand Audit methodology aligned with Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) standards, including sampling, documentation standards, and issue writing.
- Participate in discussions of SOX control issues and provide detailed examples as necessary, guided toward appropriately concluding upon test results.
- Accompany and take notes in SOX process walkthrough interviews, then complete documentation.
- Perform audit tests of SOX, business, and/or IT general controls, check sampled evidence documentation against specified criteria, and identify exceptions.
- Provide input into discussions of any exceptions with management.
- Fill out workpaper templates documenting test results and conclusions according to IA methodology.
- Draft language for any issues identified to be reported to management.
- Report on the status of work to the direct manager and manage time to complete tasks within established timeframes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Junior or Senior standing in a related academic program; Audit or Accounting Major preferred.
- Some work experience (0 – 1 year) is preferred but not required.
- Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills.
- Proven self-starter who can initiate tasks and follow up to completion.
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
- Exceptional analytical skills; above-average attention to detail.
- Desire to learn about career opportunities in the audit and/or financial services industry.
- Excellent PC skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must have authorization to work for any employer in the US without requiring sponsorship, whether in student status or not.

About The Team
Hilltop Holdings’ Internal Audit department provides independent and objective consulting to evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls for Hilltop and its operating companies—PlainsCapital Bank, PrimeLending, and HilltopSecurities. The team applies a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the organization’s risk management, internal control, and governance processes.
