Intern/Co-op - HES&S Environmental (Fall 2027)
About the role
Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC) offers internship and co‑op opportunities to high‑performing college students who want meaningful, hands‑on experience in environmental fields. Interns and co‑ops work side‑by‑side with experienced professionals across Refining, Midstream Crude Oil & Products Logistics, and Midstream Natural Gas & Natural Gas Liquids Services. The position supports Health, Environmental, Safety & Security (HES&S) subject areas and contributes to protecting people, the environment, and surrounding communities.
Responsibilities
- Interpret and/or develop company environmental policies and guidelines; create methods and procedures to ensure conformance.
- Provide guidance and technical assistance for organizing and establishing programs, including budget inputs, and monitor compliance with policies.
- Design and/or review engineering designs and cost estimates for environmental equipment/systems; determine specifications and recommend equipment.
- Identify and investigate current and emerging environmental problems, determine causes, recommend preventive steps, and communicate findings to senior management.
- Stay current on environmental legislation, regulatory actions, and international standards; assist with impact assessments, submit required reports, and obtain permits.
- Develop environmental information, manuals, training materials, and programs; inform employees of policies and conduct training sessions.
Qualifications
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Science.
- Concurrent enrollment in a Bachelor’s program for the duration of the internship.
- Strong academic performance.
- Available to work on‑site 40 hours per week.
- Ability to safely ascend/descend multiple flights of stairs or ladders and lift or carry items up to 50 lb.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for work‑related travel.
- Authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or in the future.
- Availability for multiple work terms is preferred.
Pay
Hourly rate: $24.09 – $43.23 per hour (depending on experience and qualifications).
