About the role

At CMC, it’s the people inside our recycling centers, fabrication plants, manufacturing facilities, steel mills and offices that make us who we are as a company. This internship provides hands-on experience in real-world projects across these settings, mentorship from industry professionals, exposure to multiple departments, and opportunities to innovate and contribute from day one. Many interns transition into long-term careers at CMC.

You’ll gain training and support to excel in the steel, construction reinforcement, and ground stabilization industries, whether working in an office, operating equipment, or troubleshooting technical challenges.

Responsibilities

• Cross-train through the department to learn hands-on skills related to industrial/engineering technologies
• Complete and analyze time and motion studies
• Document and report/suggest changes to improve processes
• Work with leadership on ways to improve and sustain processes
• Create, review, and update existing process flow layouts
• Collaborate with the CMC team on process improvement initiatives and projects
• Identify, evaluate, and recommend cost-saving opportunities by addressing process, quality, and safety-related improvements
• Present/report on an improvement project at the end of the internship

Requirements

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or a similar field (Junior/Senior level preferred)
• Excellent quantitative and analytical skills with an aptitude for problem-solving
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work in teams and interact with employees at all levels
• Able to work independently, take initiative, and drive results with minimal supervision
• Proficient in MS Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio)
• Knowledge of Lean tools such as Value Stream Mapping, Time Study, 5S, Kanban, Standardization, JIT, and PDCA preferred
• Must meet CMC attendance standards
• Ability to interact positively with coworkers and customers, follow directions, and accept constructive feedback
• Must be able to bend, stoop, push, pull, lift, kneel, squat, crawl, and reach
• Ability to work overtime as necessary, including weekends and holidays, with little or no advance notice
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Able to work a flexible schedule, including 40-hour work weeks during appropriate semesters (summer: June–August)
• Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, engineering software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks, and ability to understand and apply ISO work instructions and standard operating practices
• Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and self-motivation
• Ability to work in varying temperatures and weather conditions
• Understanding of manufacturing and continuous improvement processes
• Strong interest in Industrial Engineering Technologies
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks preferred
• Ability to manipulate and utilize working drawings
• Previous internship experience preferred

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in an Industrial Engineering or Operations Management program (Junior/Senior level preferred).
