INTERDISCIPLINARY ENGINEER

This position is located in the Rapid Innovation Branch (Code 100TO.32) of the Innovation and Technology Insertion Division (Code 100TO.3) within the Transformation Office (Code 100TO) at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Responsibilities

• Conduct engineering studies, technical surveys, and prepare reports and recommendations based on technical assessments of identified industrial improvements/transformation initiatives.
• Prepare drawings and operator instructions, show material and parts setup, and provide the required information to develop the technical documentation package.
• Research new additive and subtractive technologies and equipment and provide recommendations for leadership for future capability acquisitions.
• Define innovative project goals and scope, develop project plans, determine necessary resources, and manage the project budget to ensure projects are completed within financial constraints.
• Communicate and develop partnerships with various internal and external stakeholders to include other shipyard departments, academia, and private industry.
• Adhere to the concepts, work practices, policies, and philosophy of naval shipyard overhaul, repair, and maintenance work.
• Perform work in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals). Participate in medical surveillance programs.
• Travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS locations, including remote or isolated sites, and travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level (time-in-grade requirement).
• Appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
• Must wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must include:

• Applying CAD modeling practices and programs, including but not limited to Solid Edge, Solidworks, AutoCAD, Inventor, and utilizing 3D scanning hardware and software.
• Designing complex components made from metals, plastics, composites, or resins using various manufacturing processes and equipment.
• Applying knowledge of CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360), slicing software (e.g., Cura, Simplify3D), and post-processing techniques for 3D printed parts.
• Interpreting engineering drawings and visualizing objects in three dimensions, including reverse engineering items from 3D scans.
• Applying knowledge of material properties, behaviors, applications, and limitations of plastics, metals, composites, resins, etc.
• Interpreting geometric dimensioning and tolerance (GD&T) as it relates to engineering and shop tooling drawings.
• Providing technical expertise to management officials utilizing excellent oral and written communication skills.

Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements:

• Successful completion of a professional engineering degree from a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
• OR current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
• OR successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board.
• OR successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences that included the specified courses in the basic requirements.
• OR successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field (e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology) with at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
