About the role

The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is seeking a dynamic Insurance Rate Analyst to join the Rate Regulation Branch. This role involves studying and applying the principles and techniques of insurance ratemaking in a fast-paced, hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Work with data from large databases or financial reports, conduct data analysis, and compile data to generate rate component determination (RCD) generic factors and prepare mandated reports.
  • Review and analyze less difficult rate filings containing rates, rating plans, rating systems, manual rules, and policy forms for property and casualty lines of business.
  • Communicate with insurers to conduct data calls, prepare summary reports, and provide consultation to other departmental staff on technical issues.
  • Perform individual or group projects as assigned by the Bureau Chief and other duties as required.
  • Complete and submit a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700) within 30 days of appointment, with annual filings and a Leaving Office filing within 30 days of separation.

Requirements

  • Understand and apply principles and techniques of insurance ratemaking.
  • Work with large databases and financial reports to conduct data analysis.
  • Review and analyze rate filings for property and casualty insurance lines.
  • Communicate effectively with insurers and departmental staff.
  • Complete required filings under the Conflict of Interest Code, including Form 700.
  • Attach all required documents (degree, transcript, license, certificate) to verify minimum qualifications.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated in the Classification Specification. Eligible candidates include those currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, reinstatement, list or LEAP eligibility, or those in the process of obtaining list eligibility. SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority.

Pay

$4,582.00 - $5,205.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025 requires a reduction in pay in exchange for monthly hours of PLP 2025 leave credits. The salary range does not reflect this reduction.
