Responsibilities
- Analyze insurance policies across commercial general liability, property, professional liability, D&O, E&O, and specialty lines to render written coverage opinions and recommendations
- Draft and respond to reservations of rights letters, coverage denial letters, and tender correspondence
- Litigate declaratory judgment actions on behalf of insurer clients in state and federal courts
- Defend against bad faith claims under Florida Statute § 624.155 or New York Insurance Law § 2601, advising clients on exposure and litigation strategy
- Manage all phases of litigation including pleadings, discovery, depositions, motion practice, trial preparation, and appellate briefing
- Coordinate with coverage counsel, outside adjusters, and in-house teams on complex multi-party or multi-policy disputes
- Advise insurer clients on excess and surplus lines issues, reinsurance implications, and policy language disputes
- Handle subrogation matters and interplay between primary and excess coverage layers
- Stay current on evolving case law in FL/NY impacting coverage defenses, late notice, cooperation clause enforcement, and related issues
- Mentor junior associates and contribute to firm business development initiatives
Requirements
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
- Active bar membership in Florida and/or New York — dual admission a plus
- 3–10+ years of insurance coverage litigation experience at a law firm or in-house at an insurer
- Demonstrated experience handling declaratory judgment actions and/or bad faith litigation
- Strong legal writing skills — coverage opinions, briefs, and motion practice
- Ability to manage an active, varied docket with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with property insurance coverage disputes (Hurricane, AOB, assignment of benefits litigation in FL)
- Familiarity with excess/surplus lines issues or Lloyd's of London market practices
- Prior experience advising on coverage for construction defect, environmental, or cyber liability claims
- Appellate experience in Florida District Courts of Appeal or New York Appellate Division
- Background working with specialty insurers, MGAs, or captive programs
Pay
$150,000 - $190,000 per year
