What this job involves

The Instrumentation & Calibration Team Lead is a hands-on technical role that combines daily calibration work with team leadership responsibilities. You'll serve as the technical expert for instrumentation and control systems across our pharmaceutical manufacturing campus, ensuring all equipment operates within precise specifications while maintaining cGMP compliance. This position is perfect for an experienced calibration technician ready to advance into leadership—you'll spend 60-70% of your time performing complex calibrations and troubleshooting critical systems, while dedicating 30-40% to mentoring your team and coordinating work activities. Your expertise will directly impact product quality, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency while you develop your leadership skills in a dynamic pharmaceutical environment.

What your day-to-day will look like

  • Perform multi-point calibrations on process instrumentation including temperature transmitters, pressure sensors, flow meters, pH meters, conductivity analyzers, and analytical equipment using NIST-traceable standards
  • Oversee and coordinate daily activities of 2-4 instrumentation technicians by assigning work tasks, reviewing completed calibrations for accuracy, and providing hands-on coaching and technical guidance
  • Manage your assigned building area to ensure all scheduled calibrations and preventive maintenance tasks are completed on time while maintaining the highest quality standards
  • Troubleshoot and maintain building automation systems (BMS), HVAC controls, and manufacturing equipment instrumentation to minimize downtime and maximize system reliability
  • Utilize CMMS (Maximo or similar) to document calibration results with as-found/as-left data, track work orders, generate compliance reports, and maintain calibration databases
  • Create and maintain accurate calibration records that comply with cGMP requirements and regulatory standards, ensuring traceability of all measurement standards
  • Stay current with cGMP regulations, industry standards, and calibration best practices through ongoing training, and identify opportunities to improve procedures and recommend changes to management

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with instrumentation calibration and maintenance in a regulated pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or similar GMP/GLP environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency calibrating diverse instrumentation including temperature, pressure, flow, analytical equipment, pH meters, conductivity analyzers, and process control instruments
  • Experience using calibration standards and equipment such as Fluke calibrators, dead weight testers, dry block calibrators, or similar NIST-traceable equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation including P&IDs, loop diagrams, instrument specifications, and calibration procedures
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and CMMS software for documentation, reporting, and work order management
  • Valid driver's license with availability for occasional on-call responsibilities and emergency response as operational needs require
  • Physical ability to work in cleanroom manufacturing environments with gowning and respirator protocols, work at heights using ladders, perform overhead work, and lift equipment up to 50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Instrumentation, Electronics, Industrial Maintenance, or related technical discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • 4+ years of instrumentation and calibration experience with at least 1 year in a lead, senior, or supervisory capacity demonstrating leadership or mentorship abilities
  • Working knowledge of building management systems (BMS) or process control platforms such as Siemens, DeltaV, Honeywell, or Allen Bradley
  • Professional certifications in instrumentation or calibration (ISA CCST, metrology certifications, or similar technical credentials)
  • Understanding of 21 CFR Part 11 requirements for electronic records and signatures in regulated environments
  • Experience with laboratory and analytical instrumentation calibration including spectrophotometers, analytical balances, particle counters, and environmental monitoring equipment
  • Familiarity with process control theory, PID loop tuning, and control optimization strategies for HVAC and manufacturing systems
