Instructor (PAC) Pool - 2026/2027: SCUBA

About the Role

The SCUBA Activity Area in the Physical Activities Course (PAC) program, part of the School of Exercise, Sport, and Health Sciences in the College of Health at Oregon State University, invites applications for one or more fixed-term, non-tenure track full/part-time Instructor (PAC) positions to teach courses on a term-by-term basis for the 2026/2027 academic year. Reviews occur as needed, and qualified candidates will be contacted when positions become available. Some appointments may be renewed or transitioned to an annual instructional position at the discretion of the program Director.

The PAC Program’s mission is to provide all Oregon State University students with the knowledge and experience to make sound decisions regarding present and future physically active lifestyles. The program offers quality instruction in safe, adequately equipped facilities, fostering a positive and enjoyable learning environment. Courses may include Aquatics, Artistic & Social Dance, Aerobics & Fitness Development, Martial Arts, Mind/Body, Outdoor Recreation, Resistance Training, Sports, Yoga, and Games.

Responsibilities

• Plan and organize instruction to maximize student learning.
• Demonstrate thorough and accurate knowledge of the field or discipline.
• Maintain familiarity with college and program goals, mission, and long-range plans.
• Be accessible to students for advisement and consultation.
• Prepare, distribute, and submit syllabi and approved course outlines for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies.
• Participate in meetings and events required by program administrators.
• Lead physical activity courses and demonstrate activity-specific movements for 50-110 minutes per class.
• Lift/carry SCUBA cylinders and full SCUBA rigs (50-80 lbs.) and demonstrate/teach dive rescue of adult victims.
• Safely operate university Motor Pool vehicles, including ¾ ton pickup trucks and passenger vans.
• Work nights and/or weekends, including travel with students to open water sites and overnight stays near dive sites.
• Perform duties in pool and/or outdoor environments, which may involve extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in any field.
• Current, valid Adult CPR and AED Certification by the start of classes.
• Current, valid First Aid certification by the start of classes.
• Concussion training by the start of classes.
• Evident commitment to educational equity.
• Demonstrated ability to design, teach, and assess courses supporting inclusive learning principles and equitable teaching practices.
• Current and valid certification as a PADI Master SCUBA Diver Instructor.
• 1+ years of experience instructing SCUBA courses.
• Current and valid driver’s license.
• Current, valid Emergency O2 Certification by the start of classes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in any field.
• Current and valid certification as a PADI Master SCUBA Diver Trainer and/or Course Director.
• 5+ years of experience instructing SCUBA courses.
• Current SCUBA cylinder inspector certification (PSI preferred) and experience in SCUBA equipment service and maintenance.
• CPR, First Aid, AED, and Emergency O2 Instructor certification.
• Experience mentoring and certifying Dive Masters.
• Successful teaching experience in a higher education setting or equivalent.
• Previous experience assessing student learning outcomes and curriculum development.

Pay

Starting salary range: $32,100 – $39,233 pro-rated based on the number of classes taught per term.

Schedule

• Classes meet 1-3 times per week for 50-110 minutes per session.
• Position requires working nights and/or weekends, including travel and overnight stays near dive sites.
• Anticipated start date: September 16, 2026.
• Anticipated end date: June 15, 2027.
