SCUBA Certification Evaluator Pool - Spring, Summer, and Fall 2026

This is a part-time, hourly, 12-month, professional faculty position. Applications are reviewed on an as-needed basis; qualified candidates will be contacted when positions become available throughout the academic year. Some appointments may be reviewed for renewal or transition to an instructional position annually at the discretion of the program Director.

About the role

The SCUBA Certification Evaluator supports the SCUBA courses offered through the PAC Recreational SCUBA Programs by guiding and evaluating students throughout the process of achieving certification through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). Courses include Open Water (PAC 242), Advanced Open Water (PAC 243), Rescue Diver (PAC 244), specialties (PAC 245), and Divemaster I & II (PAC 299). The evaluator provides supervision and runs pool and open-water sessions independently, ensuring PADI ratio standards are met for student safety.

The primary mission of the PAC Program is to provide all Oregon State University students with the knowledge and experience to make sound decisions regarding physically active lifestyles. The program offers quality instruction in safe, well-equipped facilities, fostering a positive and enjoyable learning environment.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with students (small groups and individuals, including minors) in pool sessions and open-water dives to practice techniques, skills, and equipment usage necessary for certification.
• Assist or independently run dive groups of 20+ students with additional staff or volunteers in pool sessions and open-water dives.
• Modify assistance based on each student’s skill and comfort level.
• Evaluate student skills to determine readiness for progression in the established curriculum.
• Enforce all safety rules at pool and open-water sites.
• Guide students in proper dive planning for open-water dives.
• Drive/transport students and/or equipment to open-water sites.
• Provide general equipment care, including setup, sanitization, and storage.
• Service equipment if certified; assist with inventory check-in/out.
• Demonstrate equipment function and usage for students, depending on course level.

Requirements

• Current, valid PADI Open Water ScUBA Instructor certification, professional liability insurance, and good standing with PADI.
• Current Adult CPR, AED Essentials, First Aid, and oxygen provider certifications (must be completed prior to the start of classes).
• Minimum of 150 dives, with 20 in a professional supervisory position (4 of which must be with the OSU SCUBA program, may be earned as a volunteer).
• Ability to manage small groups (6 students alone) and assist with large groups (up to 10).
• Experience with night dives (minimum 10) and deep dives (minimum 10).
• Ability to safely operate full-size trucks loaded with SCUBA equipment or 12-passenger vans with students.
• Current DAN accident insurance.
• Ability to provide own SCUBA equipment necessary for OSU’s dive environment.
• Successful completion of a criminal history check (position is critical/security-sensitive).
• Valid driver’s license and successful motor vehicle history check (required for driving university or personal vehicles on behalf of the university).

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to design, teach, and assess courses supporting inclusive learning principles and equitable teaching practices.

Working Conditions

• Requires working nights and/or weekends.
• Travel with students to open-water sites, including overnight stays near dive sites.
• Work in water and outdoor environments, potentially involving extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

Pay

Hourly pay range: $16.76 - $20.00
