PAC Academic & Recreational SCUBA Leader

Oregon State University’s Physical Activity Courses (PAC) in the College of Health seeks a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month combination PAC Academic & Recreational SCUBA Program Manager & PAC SCUBA Instructor. This position blends academic instruction with administrative leadership of the university’s SCUBA programs.

About the role

The PAC program delivers interactive, hands-on physical-activity courses that serve students of all abilities. The SCUBA Program Manager & Instructor oversees the PAC Academic & Recreational Dive Center, PADI SCUBA Diving Program, Dive Locker Rental System, PADI Divemaster Program, and the SCUBA Dive Locker Facility while teaching SCUBA courses that foster inclusive, equitable learning.

Responsibilities

• Manage the PAC Academic & Recreational Dive Center, PADI SCUBA Diving Program, Dive Locker Rental System, PADI SCUBA Divemaster Program, and SCUBA Dive Locker Facility.
• Supervise SCUBA personnel, including Certification Evaluator staff, Instructors, equipment managers, student workers, volunteers, and Divemaster candidates.
• Administer the Dive Locker Rental and Inventory System.
• Collaborate with the PAC Director to manage the SCUBA budget.
• Plan and organize SCUBA instruction to maximize student learning.
• Establish meaningful student learning outcomes for courses and program.
• Demonstrate thorough, accurate knowledge of the field and discipline.
• Teach SCUBA courses in pool, classroom, and open-water environments.
• Perform equipment tuning, service, and maintenance.
• Lead physical-activity courses and demonstrate activity-specific movements for 50–90 minutes per class.
• Lift and carry SCUBA cylinders and full rigs (50–80 lbs) and perform dive-rescue of adult victims.
• Operate university vehicles (¾-ton pickup trucks and passenger vans) and travel with students to open-water sites, including overnight stays.
• Work evenings, weekends, and in extreme temperature/weather conditions in both pool and outdoor environments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in any field.
• 150+ logged dives with cold-water experience.
• Current PADI Master SCUBA Diver Instructor & Trainer certification.
• Valid driver’s license.
• 1+ year experience operating a dive shop, dive program, or equivalent.
• 1+ years experience instructing SCUBA courses.
• Previous supervisory experience.
• Current Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (or higher) by start of instruction.
• Current Emergency O₂ certification by start of classes.
• Experience and/or certification in SCUBA equipment tuning, service, and maintenance.
• Concussion training completed by start of classes.
• Evident commitment to educational equity and ability to design, teach, and assess courses that support inclusive learning principles and promote equitable teaching practices.

Pay

$38,000 – $40,000 for a 9-month appointment.

Schedule

• Full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month academic-year position.

• Evening, weekend, and overnight travel to open-water dive sites required.
