Instructor of Speech & Hearing Sciences/Director of Clinical Education

About the Role

The Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences at West Texas A&M University invites applications for a non-tenured full-time faculty position beginning in January 2027. This role serves as both an academic and clinical instructor and as the Director of Clinical Education, focusing primarily on graduate student clinical experiences both internally and in the community, state, and nation. The Director tracks competencies, knowledge, and skills acquired across the graduate program to ensure comprehensive clinical education per ASHA standards. This faculty member will develop, execute, and assess new clinical education initiatives, including simulations and community-based learning. Additional responsibilities include leadership and administrative tasks as assigned, teaching 1–2 didactic courses per long semester, and providing clinical supervision to first-year graduate students. Summer responsibilities are anticipated for preparation and departmental operations.

Work Performed

• Report to and assist program director/department chair in accreditation and related academic tasks.
• Teach 1 to 2 didactic courses per long semester.
• Provide clinical supervision/instruction to first-year graduate students per long semester.
• Communicate and collaborate professionally with departmental/college faculty and university staff.
• Establish and maintain relationships with speech-language pathologists locally, statewide, and nationally to place students for practica.
• Develop, propose, and execute policies and procedures for clinical practica in alignment with departmental, university, state, and national guidelines.
• Plan and organize annual program and clinical orientation.
• Monitor and assess student growth and progress in each practicum as part of a comprehensive graduate education.
• Schedule and lead routine group and individual meetings regarding student progress and performance in clinical practicum.
• Submit and monitor new contracts and affiliation agreements for clinical practica.
• Maintain excellent documentation and records.
• Participate in recruitment initiatives, scholarly conferences, and related events to support departmental and university missions.

Necessary Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in speech-language pathology, communication disorders, speech and hearing sciences, or a related field.
• ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).
• Texas Department of Licensure and Regulation (TDLR) license in speech-language pathology or ability to obtain.
• At least 2–3 years of clinical practice as a speech-language pathologist in any setting with any population.
• Ability to use database and related programs for contract management, assessment of student clinical experiences, documentation, and EMR, along with standard technology (e.g., email, Microsoft Word).

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience supervising/educating graduate students or clinical fellows in speech-language pathology.
• Previous experience in program development and leadership/supervision including clinical or educational initiatives.
• Previous experience educating professionals or students in any learning environment, including didactic courses, professional development events, in-services, or guest lectures.
• Working knowledge of ASHA standards for training and education.
• Leadership and/or administrative experience including program assessment, strategic planning, contract negotiation, and conflict resolution.

Pay & Schedule

• Proposed minimum salary: Commensurate with experience.
• Location: Canyon, Texas.
• Faculty position beginning January 2027 (spring semester).
• Summer schedule is flexible, but responsibilities are anticipated for preparation and departmental operations.
