Instructor in Assistive Technology, Initial Focus: Special Education (Part-Time Pool)

About the Role

Under the general direction of a dean, an Instructor (Non-Contact/Temporary) provides comprehensive classroom instruction to students from diverse backgrounds to facilitate the attainment of their academic or vocational objectives. In accordance with Education Code sections 87482.5, Instructors (Non-Contract/Temporary) may be employed up to 67% of a full-time assignment.

Established in 1925, Ventura College was one of the first community colleges in California and currently enrolls 14,500 students. Located approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara, the 112-acre campus is set in the rolling hills of Ventura, with a clear view of the Channel Islands from several spots on campus.

The Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) serves residents throughout Ventura County with three colleges: Moorpark College, Oxnard College, and Ventura College. Responsibilities

• Provide group and one-on-one instruction in assistive computer technology courses.
• Comply with district, college, and Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSP&S) policies and regulations for instructional settings.
• Provide academic instruction through lecture, lab, or performance courses; assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher-order thinking skills among students.
• Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, institutions of higher education, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills; refer students to support services as appropriate.
• Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide timely feedback.
• Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with department, college, and district goals.
• Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, and student learning outcomes; prepare and submit data and reports related to course and student progress.
• Evaluate and select instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, software, and tools in collaboration with discipline faculty; order instructional materials according to campus bookstore procedures.
• Participate in curriculum and program development; update syllabi; collaborate with discipline faculty to assess and revise measurable student performance indicators for each course.
• Revise and update course content and materials of instruction in accordance with new theory, application, and industry developments within the discipline.
• Attend and participate in committees and department, division, campus, and district meetings; may participate in articulation and matriculation activities.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.

• Master’s, or equivalent foreign degree, in the category of disability, special education, education, psychology, educational psychology, or rehabilitation counseling AND 15 semester units of upper division or graduate study in adapted computer technology; OR
• Possession of an appropriate California Community College Credential.

Equivalency

The Ventura County Community College District recognizes that candidates may attain expertise in a discipline through a variety of means. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments may be judged as equivalent to the stated minimum qualifications. Candidates whose transcripts do not list the exact degree title may complete and submit the Supplemental Questionnaire for Equivalency for review by the Districtwide Equivalency Committee. Equivalency review is an independent process and may not delay the hiring timeline.
