Instructional Design Associate and Trainer

About the role

The Instructional Design Associate and Trainer is a versatile and creative professional responsible for the development and delivery of high-quality instructional and outreach materials for Public Safety. Reporting to the Public Safety Operations team, this role is a contributing member of the training team, dedicated to the development and delivery of learner-centric instructional content. The role involves creating training across different learning modalities, applying instructional design principles, developing synchronous and asynchronous media, graphics, simulations, and using various content management platforms.

The incumbent develops, revises, and maintains asynchronous e-learning components consistent with the various safety and compliance programs within Public Safety, applying VT brand guidelines and best practices for accessibility. The role may also include delivering in-person and hybrid training programs for select program areas. Collaborating with stakeholders, the incumbent ideates and develops content, identifies knowledge gaps, and uses that information to create new training or revise existing training as needed.

As part of the operations team, the Instructional Design Associate and Trainer researches and integrates new technologies, media formats, and methodologies into public safety training. Working with program managers, departmental representatives, faculty, and graduate assistants, the incumbent evaluates training gaps within the student curriculum and develops or revises training to address those gaps. The role also identifies opportunities to create and implement training tracks for faculty, staff, and students, and engages with student groups and organizations on public safety issues.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver high-quality instructional and outreach materials for Public Safety programs.
• Create and revise asynchronous e-learning components, ensuring compliance with VT brand guidelines and accessibility best practices.
• Design and deliver in-person and hybrid training programs for select program areas.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to ideate, develop, and revise training content based on identified knowledge gaps.
• Research and integrate new technologies, media formats, and methodologies into public safety training.
• Evaluate training gaps within the student curriculum and develop or revise training to address those gaps.
• Identify opportunities to create and implement training tracks for faculty, staff, and students.
• Engage with student groups and organizations on public safety issues.
• Perform other duties as requested, supporting a healthy work environment and exemplifying the Virginia Tech Principles of Community.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (IT, human resources, education, training and development) or comparable training and experience.
• Experience in instructional design and development of training content for diverse audiences and learning styles.
• Experience managing learning management systems, including using reports and analytics to measure training value.

Skills

• Technical proficiency in e-learning tools (e.g., Rise, Storyline, Articulate 360, Captivate) and production of SCORM-compliant, accessible content.
• Ability to lead brainstorming sessions with stakeholders and develop project plans and timelines for delivery.
• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, working effectively with subject matter experts and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and project/time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree and/or professional certification in a related area.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud products, including Adobe Express, Photoshop, and InDesign.
• Experience with data visualization tools and creation of graphics to convey critical concepts.
• Experience with Qualtrics, PowerBI, or similar survey and data visualization tools.
• Willingness to travel on several overnight trips each year to assist with project management and training in other Virginia Tech locations.

Pay

$65,000 - $70,000
