Institution Security Officer II
About the Role
The Institutional Security Officer (ISO) II at UMass Dartmouth plays a critical role in ensuring campus safety. ISOs are trained to use portable radios to communicate with other ISOs, police officers, and dispatchers, ensuring a quick and appropriate response to any situation. This position serves as the extra eyes and ears for the police, supplementing police services with a uniformed and problem-solving presence to protect and safeguard the university's buildings, grounds, and community. The ISO position can serve as a first step toward becoming a university police officer.
Receives direct supervision from the shift supervisor, who provides instruction, assigns work, and reviews performance for conformance to laws, department rules, and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas on foot or by vehicle, conducting security checks of academic/residential buildings and grounds.
- Conduct surveillance of assigned areas, determine the extent of violations, and take necessary action in accordance with authorized procedures.
- Handle or control emergencies by administering first aid, summoning assistance, directing traffic, and participating in searches.
- Prepare basic reports in the records management system for minor disturbances, found property, vandalism, and vehicle towing.
- Investigate fire egress door alarm activations and replace expired fire extinguishers to safeguard facility property and occupants.
- Respond to inquiries about travel routes, parking, and university rules, providing information to students, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Screen individuals for identification, purpose of visit, or required authorization; participate in searches for missing persons or property.
- Operate two-way radios and base station address systems; lock/unlock doors, gates, and direct or control traffic as needed.
- Assess road conditions to determine the need for emergency snow removal or sanding.
- Investigate parking complaints (e.g., fire lane violations, handicap parking) and take appropriate action, including issuing warnings or tickets and documenting reports for towing.
- Provide additional security for arrestees, victims, or witnesses; assist with crowd control at public gatherings or demonstrations.
- Assist in evacuations during drills or emergencies; appear as a witness in court proceedings.
- Provide safety escorts for students and other safety escort services as needed.
- Learn basic dispatcher responsibilities and assist during emergencies.
- Provide access to academic buildings and residence halls for students, faculty, staff, and contractors.
- Enforce parking violations using assigned ticketing machines.
- Provide security at assigned fixed strategic posts and conduct proactive community policing patrols.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work any hour, in all weather conditions, and in hazardous environments.
- Proficiency in all phases of duties performed; logical and effective problem-solving ability.
- Ability to provide credible testimony in a court of law.
- Physical ability to restrain adults, operate a firearm, and perform duties requiring frequent walking, standing, driving, and occasional lifting/carrying (up to 100 lbs.).
- Sufficient hand, eye, arm coordination, and strength; full use of arms and legs; good physical condition, vision, hearing, and speech.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and pass a physical fitness test, drug test, medical examination (including psychological evaluation), and background screening.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony.
- Must successfully complete an in-house 6-week field training program.
Preferred: Possess a Class A license to carry a firearm at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
Physical Demands
- Frequent (3–6 hours/day): Driving, walking, running, standing, talking, hearing, near/far/color/peripheral vision, depth perception, adjusting focus.
- Occasional (1–3 hours/day): Stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching above head, lifting/carrying (up to 100 lbs.), lowering, hand-wrist/elbow motion, grasping, holding, smell.

Pay
$46,963.54 – $63,852.10 annually.
Schedule
Variable hours, including nights and weekends.
