Security Officer II

About the role

The Security Officer maintains a safe and secure environment on Center premises. The Security Officer is relied upon for the protection, safeguarding and security of assets, staff, clients, volunteers, visitors, and other people and property on Center grounds.

Schedule & Pay

• Schedule: Sunday-Thursday 11:00pm-7:00am
• Shift Differential Premium: $0.75 per hour for hours worked on weekends, $1.00 per hour for hours worked between 3pm-11pm and $1.75 per hour for hours worked between 11pm-1am
• Status: 100%, Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Union
• Probation: 90 days

Responsibilities

• Security Operations (70%):
  • Monitor access control by using various security systems, including security center programs, CCTV, intercoms, and badge readers
  • Dispatch security personnel to specific locations in response to security incidents, suspicious activity, emergencies, alarms, panic buttons or requests for assistance
  • Follow established protocols to coordinate emergency response for fires, medical incidents, or security threats
  • Maintain effective communication with security personnel, supervisors, managers, and emergency services
  • Act as the central hub for all phone calls, radio traffic, and emails; escalate calls to proper channels as needed
  • Investigate security breaches, incidents, and other alarming behavior
  • Conduct weekly audits of cameras, keys, radios, and emergency supplies
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues, law enforcement, other security partners, staff, and volunteers
  • Develop positive, productive relationships with the LAPD and BID Security Agencies
  • Support agency goals and initiatives as required
  • Additional tasks and duties may be assigned as necessary
• Other Duties (20%):
  • Check email and activity logs daily for departmental updates
  • Log and distribute equipment (i.e. keys, radios, emergency supplies) to officers, staff and vendors
  • Complete daily activity report, incident reports or other paperwork before end of shift
  • Document and maintain accurate records of emergency and non-emergency calls, property damage, and security equipment
  • Generate incident reports for emergency responses and/or other non-emergent issues
• Training (10%):
  • Participate in security training programs and stay updated on campus policy and procedures

Required Qualifications

• A passion for the Center's work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBT people
• Current State of California Guard Card
• Passing score on a computer competency test
• Successfully complete dispatcher certification
• Satisfactory based score on scenario-based exam
• Proven experience in a security dispatcher or similar role
• Familiarity with security systems, alarm monitoring, and access control
• Demonstrated ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations
• Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities
• Must be able to prioritize tasks based on severity
• Advanced knowledge of Office software such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
• Availability to work a rotating shift and weekends as scheduled
• Must be sensitive to the needs and concerns of the LGBTQIA+ community, and people experiencing homelessness
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expression, socio-economic backgrounds, religions, ages, English-speaking abilities, immigration status, and physical abilities in a multicultural environment
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

Physical Requirements

• Physically able to stand for periods up to 8 hours
• Ability to climb stairs and walk on uneven surfaces
• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
• Good vision (including color vision and night vision) and hearing
• Ability to respond quickly to situations using appropriate intervention techniques, including potential de-escalations, as trained by management
• May be required to run in emergency situations
• Health Assessment: A health assessment will be required to ensure that applicants can safely perform job duties without risk to themselves or others

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual Spanish/English
• Current CPR Certificate
• Experience working with the LGBT community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBT people
