Inspector of Weights and Measures (6220) – DPH

About the role

Under general supervision, the Inspector of Weights and Measures inspects and tests weighing and measuring devices, petroleum products, and packaged commodities for labeled content and retail price verification. They enforce policies and procedures, interpret applicable laws, and educate employees, businesses, and the public. Inspections are primarily off-site and may require physical exertion, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, climbing, and manual dexterity.

Responsibilities

• Investigate complaints concerning illegal weights and measures practices.
• Conduct field tests of various weighing and measuring devices.
• Inspect pre-packaged meats and other packaged commodities.
• Enforce state and county laws related to weights and measures by issuing warning notices and citations.
• Take samples of gasoline and other petroleum products.
• Answer questions from the general public related to weights and measures and maintain good public relations.
• Assist with annually calibrating all field standards and on-the-job training.
• Write daily inspection reports and investigative reports as required by law.

Requirements

• Possession of any two of the following three valid County Weights and Measures Inspector Licenses issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture:
  • Weight Verification License
  • Measurement Verification License
  • Transaction and Product Verification License
• Possession of a valid California Driver License.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date. One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours.

Selection Process

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete the following steps:

• Training and Experience Examination (Weight: 100%) to measure knowledge and abilities in:
  • Weighing and measuring devices (construction, maintenance, and operations).
  • State and local laws pertaining to weights and measures.
• Abilities assessed include:
  • Inspecting and testing weighing and measuring devices for accuracy.
  • Using proper investigative techniques to gather facts and take enforcement actions.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Relating effectively to merchants, managers, and the public in various situations.

Candidates must achieve a passing score to continue in the selection process. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department.

Pay

$98,514 - $119,730 annually.

Additional Information

This is a permanent civil service position with onsite work requirements. The eligible list resulting from this examination will be valid for 12 months and may be extended. The certification rule for the eligible list is the Rule of Three Scores.
