About the role
As an Innovations Software Developer Intern, you will actively contribute to a dynamic learning environment with hands-on responsibilities from day one. You’ll work as a valued team member, implementing your own ideas while supporting software development for the battery plant’s Unreal Engine 5 project and other innovation initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement software solutions in Unreal Engine 5 for gameplay mechanics, VR/AR, 3D data pipelines, database connections, and networking.
- Participate in cross-functional project teams to support software development activities.
- Create and maintain user and support documentation for assigned areas.
- Provide technical support for Unreal Engine 5 and other software projects, including troubleshooting and issue resolution.
- Develop and optimize algorithms and systems for automatic control and data management.
- Support department targets for project completion, quality assurance, and resource utilization.
- Apply Agile development principles and collaborative problem-solving in software projects.
- Adhere to coding standards, best practices, 5S, and safety standards.
- Conduct research and conceptualize new ideas for innovation projects.
- Support project management, coordination, and community-based events.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data to align with business strategies.
- Recommend best practices and process improvements.
- Support the organization’s vision, strategy, and roadmap through stakeholder collaboration.
- Create PowerPoint presentations and prepare materials for meetings.
- Provide general administrative support, including scheduling meeting rooms and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Enrolled student status at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (transfer students must provide GPA from current university).
- Completed at least 30 credit hours at time of application.
- Pursuing a BA/BS in Computer Science (preferred), Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Base knowledge of C/C++, problem-solving skills, and a passion for software development.
- Familiarity with Unreal Engine 5, Unity, Godot, or software version control (e.g., Perforce) is a plus.
- Strong organization, project management, and communication skills (English required; German preferred).
- Analytical, solution-oriented mindset.
- Must pass a substance abuse test before the work term.
- Must attach an unofficial transcript with application.
Training & Development
- BMW-specific systems and processes (e.g., PQM, TAIS, CAMS, CATIA, Nuclos).
- Software architecture and design.
- Project steering and presentation techniques.
- International project work within the Gen6 Network (TS).
