Location: Chemours Steam Facility in Penns Grove, New Jersey. The plant provides critical process steam using two dual-fuel auxiliary/package boilers (60,000–82,500 lbs/hr steam flow) fired on natural gas and fuel oil, plus a rented boiler for winter reliability. Operations include water treatment, high-voltage switchgear monitoring, fuel oil system operation, and steam system management, running year-round under annual renewal contracts.

About the role

The Industrial Maintenance Technician ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the steam facility by performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on mechanical equipment and systems that support continuous steam generation and distribution.

Responsibilities

  • Execute preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on plant mechanical equipment and systems; document work in a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and overhaul equipment associated with steam generation and distribution, including boilers and auxiliaries, pumps, valves, fans, blowers, heat exchangers, piping, fuel oil, feedwater, condensate, and steam distribution systems.
  • During boiler outages, planned maintenance, and emergency repairs, inspect equipment, identify deficiencies, and complete necessary repairs safely and efficiently.
  • Apply precision maintenance techniques such as equipment alignment, bearing and mechanical seal replacement, lubrication, vibration troubleshooting, and mechanical inspection.
  • Complete pipefitting, rigging, and fabrication work; install, modify, and repair piping systems, valves, supports, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Use equipment drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), technical manuals, and maintenance procedures to troubleshoot equipment and safely complete assigned work.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections to identify abnormal conditions, assess mechanical issues, and recommend corrective actions that support reliable boiler and balance-of-plant operation.
  • Partner with Operations and Maintenance personnel to coordinate work, resolve equipment issues, and identify opportunities to improve plant performance, reliability, maintenance procedures, and job plans.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and equipment histories; coordinate with contractors, OEMs, and outside service providers to ensure work meets plant safety, quality, and performance expectations.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by complying with environmental, health, safety, and regulatory requirements and supporting other plant activities as assigned.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or Plant Manager, demonstrating flexibility and commitment to plant operations.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Process Technology, Power Plant Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred; equivalent military training, technical certifications, or relevant industrial maintenance experience may substitute.
  • Valid State of New Jersey Black Seal High-Pressure Boiler Operator License (must maintain).
  • Mechanical maintenance experience in a power plant, steam plant, refinery, chemical plant, manufacturing facility, or similar heavy industrial environment.
  • Working knowledge of steam-generating and balance-of-plant equipment, including boilers, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, piping, fuel oil, feedwater, condensate, and auxiliary mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and overhaul mechanical equipment, with experience in precision maintenance activities such as equipment alignment, bearing and mechanical seal replacement, lubrication, rigging, and vibration troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, P&IDs, equipment manuals, specifications, and maintenance procedures.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and industrial safety practices, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, and hot work procedures.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills; ability to collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, contractors, and other personnel to support safe and reliable plant operations.
  • Valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license (must remain in good standing).

Working Conditions

  • Physical requirements: standing/walking for extended periods; climbing stairs, ladders, and elevated structures; working from platforms and walkways at varying heights; kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching; working in confined or difficult-to-access areas; routinely lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Industrial steam plant environment with exposure to rotating equipment, pressurized systems, hot surfaces, steam, chemicals, noise, vibration, and varying indoor/outdoor weather conditions.
  • Required PPE may include hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), fall protection equipment, respirators, chemical-resistant clothing, and other protective equipment as dictated by job duties and site safety procedures.
  • Respirator medical evaluations and fit testing may be required.
  • Compliance with all facility safety policies, including smoking restrictions.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Schedule

  • Monday through Friday day-shift schedule.
  • Rotating day or night shift coverage may be required based on operational needs.
  • Occasional overtime, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and callouts; participation in an on-call rotation is required.

Pay

Base pay rate: $39.78 to $46.15 per hour, plus an annual performance bonus.
