The Material Flow Engineering team at Tesla is seeking an Automation Project Engineer to lead the design and implementation of automated guided vehicles and associated equipment for new and existing factories and programs at Gigafactory Texas in Austin, TX.

About the Role

This position will be based in Gigafactory Texas and involves significant leadership in product and manufacturing system execution. The role entails extensive collaboration with other teams and engineering disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Design automated material handling solutions to establish new and improved material flows throughout the facilities using automated vehicles.

  • Develop analytical models to establish design criteria and overall system performance criteria.

  • Lead the development, detailed engineering design, and system build of mobile robot programs.

  • Implement mobile robots in production environments.

  • Create, maintain, and communicate project schedules.

  • Develop test programs to ensure functional, performance, and safety requirements are met.

  • Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time and uptime.

  • Debug and implement corrective actions for breakdowns and chronic equipment failure.

  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, supervisors, and operators.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.

  • 5 years+ of experience in material handling automation: mobile Robotics (AGVs or AMRs), and robotic material handling AS/RS, electric monorail system and general conveyance.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills at all organizational levels.

  • A passion to work on mechanical automation equipment, robots, design of electro mechanical/pneumatic systems, motion controls and navigation & vision systems.

  • A solid engineering background with hands-on experience and high mechanical aptitude.

  • Must understand the integration of equipment design into existing or new systems.

  • Values people, ethics, commitment, fun and an engaging culture.

  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.

  • Must understand the nuances of autonomous system requirements, algorithms and operating environments.

  • Knowledge on firmware, safety controllers, mobile robot fleet and track programming.
