I & E Designer

About the Role

As a lead designer, you will supervise and provide technical direction to a team of designers, ensuring the total delivery of electrical and instrumentation deliverables and services on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations. This role involves advanced design work, serving as a technical specialist for complex assignments, and requires extensive progressive experience in electrical and instrumentation design. You will work under minimal supervision and utilize project controls for cost, schedule, and quality.

Responsibilities

• Utilize department design and drafting standards.
• Recognize and communicate project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
• Identify and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
• Provide on-site assistance during startup.
• Offer technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel.
• Coordinate work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
• Provide the discipline lead with the current status of project work, including delays or improvements in the projected finish date.
• Confer with clients to determine scopes of work and interact on technical matters.
• Direct designers to complete tasks.
• Produce 480VAC, 15kV/5kV equipment specifications, and electrical installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
• Mentor subordinates and participate in team or cross-discipline checks to ensure coordination between design disciplines.
• Check calculations made by other designers for accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, and good engineering practice.
• Determine construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates.
• Delegate work to designers based on their technical skills and experience, ensuring efficient progress and quality.
• Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure efficient progress and quality.
• Participate in planning training programs, continuous education opportunities, and professional development of staff.
• Identify possible changes in scope and draft change orders.
• Proactively lead and coordinate the efforts of a design staff to achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
• Develop design criteria and scope of work.
• Forecast hours to complete professional services and develop staffing plans based on deliverables and project schedule.
• Identify required information and proactively obtain it.
• Coordinate with other disciplines regarding design development and changes.
• Apply company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
• Deliver presentations of Hargrove Engineers & Constructors services.

Requirements

• Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting (required).
• 25 or more years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation drafting and design.
• Familiarity with the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
• Ability to perform lighting level calculations, size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for lighting and power applications.
• Ability to perform voltage drop calculations and route conduit and cable tray.
• Ability to calculate tray and conduit fill and determine motor control center loading.
• Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
• Ability to create accurate electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
• Ability to determine load center unit substation loading and develop equipment specifications for 480VAC equipment (e.g., motor control centers, variable frequency drives, induction and synchronous motors, load center unit substations) with engineering review and approval.
• Familiarity with 15kV power system equipment and installation techniques both above and below ground.
• Ability to develop equipment specifications for 15kV/5kV equipment (e.g., switchgear, load break switches, motor control centers) and perform calculations for required short circuit and overcurrent protective device ratings with engineering review and approval.
• Ability to develop electrical installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
• Ability to develop a construction cost estimate, detailed engineering schedule, and man-hour budget for small projects or areas of larger projects.
• Ability to determine construction material quantities.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Working knowledge of 2D AutoCAD and MicroStation; 3D AutoCAD is desirable.
• Programming experience with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), Human Machine Interface (HMI), and/or Distributed Control System (DCS) equipment.
• Ability to lead a small team and coordinate with the process group for efficient equipment layouts and space usage.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Highly developed virtual team skills and cross-divisional relationships; ability to provide interoffice execution support with no supervision.
