About the role

The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer is responsible for developing engineering deliverables in alignment with company standards and project timelines. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams, communicates project progress, and ensures the quality of deliverables through technical reviews and adherence to QA/QC procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Develops I&C engineering deliverables in accordance with company standards and procedures, following guidelines defined by the RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed) framework.
  • Collaborates with project team members to produce interdisciplinary technical deliverables, ensuring alignment with project goals and timelines.
  • Collaborates with the project team(s) to drive deliverables to completion, proactively flagging issues and ensuring discipline-specific work is completed in alignment with the project schedule, budget, and scope of work.
  • Engages in technical collaboration by reviewing work with peers and supervisors, ensuring deliverables meet quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) standards.
  • Shares industry knowledge and skillset through mentorship of technical deliverables associated with projects by assisting others in understanding calculations, design guidelines, and industry standards, as well as provides feedback and from more experienced engineers.
  • Communicates project progress and the status of I&C-specific deliverables through internal and external meetings, including kickoff meetings, status updates, design reviews, and model reviews.
  • Generates proposals and builds engineering hour budgets for the company.
  • Participates in department meetings and training sessions to stay aligned with company procedures and continuous professional development.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, electrical engineering, or computer science is required.
  • Type of Experience: 8+ years of experience in chemical, mechanical, electrical engineering, or computer science OR Professional Engineering License and 5+ years of experience required.
  • Specialized Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, problem-solving skills to propose mutually beneficial solutions, demonstrated ability of basic leadership skills and general experience with leading work groups or task forces in specific projects, competent knowledge and understanding of control valves and instrumentation commonly utilized in the industry, capable of populating instrument datasheets for all instruments, capable of reading and marking up P&IDs, capable of generating and checking Instrument Index, Controls Cable Circuit Schedule, competent understanding of Process Controls, including complex control loops, able to produce Controls Narrative and Cause and Effect matrix with minimal input from Process engineer, capable of generating and reviewing network architecture diagrams and specifying corresponding components, capable of completing panel FATs and facility as-builts, capable of troubleshooting, commissioning and startup support from office and onsite, capable of using Fisher Spec Manager to size and check control valves, expert at reviewing 3D model in Navisworks to perform I&C yellow-off and identify 3D model issues, understands basics of Control Panel design, layout, and component selection, proficient understanding of the codes and standards relevant to the industry, competent understanding of ladder logic programming, basic ability to review programs and troubleshoot, basic ability to review HMIs in some platforms, ability to self-direct and have a sense of responsibility for your own tasks, deliverables, and timelines.

Supervisory Expectations

This job does not have direct supervisory responsibilities, however, this position leads, trains, and advises the manager. Independence of Action Works independently and seeks out guidance when required, without prompting. Results are defined and existing practices are used as guidelines to determine specific work methods and carry out work activities independently; supervisor/manager/leader is available to resolve problems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work environment is the typical office and construction environment. The employee must complete their work satisfactorily in an environment where there are significant distractions, including staff, clients, and vendors walking through and conversing, telephones ringing, conversations carrying over, loud noises, and interruptions to answer questions from others, as well as loud noises, OSHA hazards, industrial materials, machinery & equipment, dangers chemical substances, and interruptions requiring the employee to answer questions from others. Must be able to drive to sites or meetings with clients.

Work Hours

Company Hours 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Hours vary and are dependent on business needs. 40 Hour Work Week Monday through Friday, hours may vary with the workload. Evenings/Weekends/OT As needed to satisfy the requirements of the position.
