This senior-level, single-contributor HR leadership role is responsible for the full scope of human resources operations for a 75-employee industrial water treatment company. The position reports directly to the CEO and serves as the primary HR resource for a diverse workforce consisting of both salaried staff and hourly employees, with hourly field service technicians representing approximately 75% of the population.

Responsibilities

  • HR Leadership & Operations
    • Serve as the sole in-house HR resource for a 75-person organization, providing day-to-day HR support to both salaried and hourly employees
    • Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO and leadership team on HR strategy, workforce planning, and organizational matters
    • Own and administer core HR processes including onboarding, offboarding, employee records, leave administration, and HRIS management
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues, ensuring fair, consistent, and legally compliant resolution
    • Develop and maintain HR policies and the employee handbook, ensuring alignment with applicable federal, state, and local employment law
  • Training & Development
    • Design, implement, and manage a structured training program for field service technicians, covering technical skills, safety, and customer-facing standards
    • Partner with operations and field leadership to identify skill gaps and build career development and advancement pathways for technicians
    • Coordinate onboarding and new-hire training for both hourly field employees and salaried staff
    • Track training completion, certifications, and renewal requirements across the technician workforce
  • Performance Management
    • Design and implement an annual performance assessment process for all employees, tailored to both salaried and hourly/field roles
    • Train managers and supervisors on conducting effective, consistent performance reviews and delivering feedback
    • Partner with leadership to align performance outcomes with compensation, promotion, and development decisions
    • Monitor and support performance improvement plans and disciplinary processes as needed
  • Safety, Compliance & Site Access Credentialing
    • Manage all external safety council training and certification requirements for field service technicians
    • Administer and track customer site access requirements, ensuring technicians meet client-specific credentialing and compliance obligations before dispatch
    • Oversee the DISA background check process for applicable employees, ensuring timely completion and accurate recordkeeping
    • Manage the company’s drug testing program, including pre-employment, random, and post-incident testing in accordance with policy and customer requirements
    • Maintain accurate compliance documentation and serve as the point of contact for customer audits related to workforce credentialing
  • Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning
    • Manage full-cycle recruiting for both salaried and hourly field positions, including sourcing, interviewing, and offer management
    • Partner with department leaders to forecast staffing needs and support workforce planning for a growing field service organization
    • Build relationships with technical schools, trade programs, and other sources of qualified field service talent

Requirements

  • Required Experience
    • 5+ years of progressive human resources experience, including experience as a sole or lead HR contributor
    • Experience supporting a mixed exempt/non-exempt or salaried/hourly workforce, ideally including field-based, technician, or trade employees
    • Demonstrated experience designing and administering training and performance management programs
    • Familiarity with employment-related compliance programs such as background screening, drug testing, and industry or client-driven certification requirements
    • Experience in industrial, field service, construction, utilities, or a related sector is strongly preferred
  • Skills And Competencies
    • Strong working knowledge of federal and state employment law, including wage and hour rules affecting hourly and salaried employees
    • Ability to operate independently as the sole HR function, balancing strategic and hands-on administrative responsibilities
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust across a blue-collar field workforce and salaried office staff alike
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly for tracking compliance, credentialing, and certification deadlines
    • Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential employee and personnel matters
    • Proficiency with HRIS, applicant tracking, and Microsoft Office tools
    • SHRM-CP, PHR, or equivalent HR certification preferred

Success Metrics

  • Successful design and rollout of a structured technician training program
  • Completion rate and timeliness of annual performance assessments across the organization
  • Compliance rate for safety council training, customer site access requirements, background checks, and drug testing
  • Employee retention, particularly within the field service technician population
  • Time-to-fill for open positions and quality of hire
  • Employee and manager satisfaction with HR support and processes

Pay

This position offers a base salary of $70,000–$80,000, plus an annual target bonus of 20% of base salary.
