About the Role
Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is seeking a Human Resources Assistant to support all administrative functions related to the onboarding of new employees and processing of internal transfers. This multi-faceted position handles the initiation of pre-employment requirements, such as background investigations, scheduling of drug screens and physicals, and verification of new hire documents.
The environment is fast-paced, requiring the ability to multi-task while reviewing documents for accuracy, scheduling candidate interviews, and confirming start dates with new employees. Strong communication skills are essential to ensure a positive candidate experience, with timely responses and open lines of communication.
This role involves developing connections with candidates and stakeholders to efficiently achieve team goals. Collaboration, critical thinking, and a sense of urgency are key to solving problems and maintaining responsiveness.
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of general personnel/clerical tasks in areas such as employee records, benefits, education/training, employment, compensation, and equal employment opportunity.
- Maintain both manual and automated personnel records.
- Collect and compile sensitive and confidential personnel statistics and prepare reports.
- Furnish information to authorized persons and/or agencies in accordance with procedures.
- Provide information to all levels of employees regarding personnel policies and procedures.
- Initiate pre-employment requirements, including background investigations, drug screens, and physicals.
- Review documents for accuracy and schedule candidate interviews.
- Confirm start dates with new employees and ensure timely communication.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED.
- 2 years of additional education and/or experience.
- Comfort working with databases and software programs (e.g., DOMA, Excel, SuccessFactors, SAP).
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting and collaborate to solve problems.
- Strong communication and critical thinking skills.
- Sense of urgency and responsiveness in a fast-paced environment.

Pay
The anticipated salary range for this role is $45,000.00 to $57,000.00. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
