DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Parks & Recreation
HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Sunday; varying shifts.
About the Role
Open to any current regular employee or any current temporary or seasonal Alaska Public Services Employee - Local 71 employees working within the Anchorage Parks & Recreation & Maintenance & Operations Departments.
Responsibilities
- Ability to operate computers, telephones, and radios.
- Experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to monitor and lead the work of others;
- Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time;
- Work in adverse weather conditions;
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, work crews and the public.
Horticulture Position
- Knowledge of and experience in the use of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and application techniques.
- Skilled in the operation and use of associated equipment, power tools, hand tools and application of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and similar products.
- Knowledge of area climates and regional growing conditions.
- Ability to operate and/or have knowledge of fertilizer spreaders, aerators, sprayers, skid loaders, tree spades, snow blowers, hand tools used in gardening, landscaping, and construction.
Park Maintenance Position
- Ability to operate and/or have knowledge of water tanker, mowers, fertilizer spreaders, aerators, sprayers, thatchers, skid loaders, tree spades, snow plows, ATV, snow machines, snow blowers, hand tools used in gardening, landscaping, and construction.
- Knowledge of area climates and regional growing conditions, regional construction and/or landscaping conditions and limitations.
- Knowledge of parks, grounds, and equipment maintenance; turf care; sports fields and trail construction and maintenance; machinery and tool maintenance, use and application of fertilizers and similar products.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and six years of experience, which includes two years of experience in the position's specialized field as noted below including two years experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- Horticulture Position: Two years experience in greenhouse plant production. Must have a current Certified Pesticide Applicators License.
- Park Maintenance Position: Two years of applicable turf maintenance, landscape, trails, and other grounds maintenance experience. Must possess a valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License with Tanker endorsement.
- Substitution: Post-secondary education in a related field may be substituted for the non-specific experience on a year for year basis.
