Job Summary
Heat treat operators monitor the process of heat treatment. They control the treatment furnaces and direct all activities of furnace operation, including the interpretation of computer data, temperature measurement and adjustment, loading and unloading product, follow work instructions and keep work area clean and organized.
Essential Functions
- Set and adjust speeds of conveyors for prescribed time cycles to pass parts through continuous furnaces.
- Read production schedules and work orders to determine processing sequences, furnace temperatures, and heat cycle requirements for objects to be heat-treated.
- Clean oxides and scales from parts or fittings, using steam sprays or chemical and water baths.
- Adjust controls to maintain temperatures and heating times, using thermal instruments and charts, dials and gauges of furnaces, and color of stock in furnaces to make setting determinations.
- Set up and operate or tend machines, such as furnaces, baths, flame-hardening machines, and electronic induction machines, that harden, anneal, and heat-treat metal.
- Examine and test parts with assortment of equipment to ensure correct hardness to customer specifications.
- Maintain productivity levels and quality requirements in support of departmental standards, goals, and schedules.
- Make sure all parts are put away after a run to ensure parts are not mixed.
- Scales tubs.
- Ensure Work In Progress (WIP) is organized and find lost bins as needed.
- Complete pre-shift check sheet and report any defects immediately.
- Follow all safety standards: Proper PPE, Steel toe boots, Seat belt, Stop at intersections.
- Keep up on shop floor activities in assigned departments and WIP.
- Monitor and optimize the scanning process and Task Management system.
- Work closely with any new driver in your department, released to the production floor.
Additional Responsibilities
- Always work in a safe manner, understanding safety and quality are priority.
- Fill out any required paperwork.
- Use of computer systems.
- Performs other duties as necessary in support of business objectives.
Job Qualifications
- Physically able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, and reach.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Basic mathematic skills to include the use of decimals and fractions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Punctual, reliable, and team-oriented.
- Equivalent 6+ months of manufacturing experience.
Environmental Exposures
- Noise – Laboratory machines.
- Chemicals, oils, acids, sprays, coolants and solvents.
- Noise – heavy machinery – if in plant.
- Noise – vibratory bowls and air feed systems – if in plant.
Continuous Improvement
Training to be completed annually.
