Location: Nashville, TN – Department of Health, Davidson County. This is a hybrid (in-office and remote) position requiring a criminal background check.

About the Office

The mission of the Department of Health focuses on protecting, promoting, and improving the health and well-being of all individuals through disease prevention, community health services, emergency preparedness, and the regulation of health care professionals. Within the Department of Health, the Division of Licensure and Regulation ensures quality of care in hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory surgical treatment centers, and other health care facilities by licensing and/or certifying 21 types of health care facilities, including laboratories.

About the Role

The HR Generalist 1 plays a vital role in supporting Tennessee state government's most valuable asset: its people. Working under the direction of the HR Director, this position supports the Department of Health's Division of Licensure and Regulation by delivering human resources services that combine hands-on transactional expertise with a commitment to service, accuracy, and compliance. Responsibilities

  • Be a trusted resource by guiding employees and managers through HR rules, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Support recruitment and staffing by posting open positions, screening applications, coordinating interview logistics, and communicating with candidates throughout the hiring process.
  • Process and audit core HR transactions, including hiring, promotions, transfers, separations, retirement, security access changes, and confidential personnel actions. Maintain accurate employee data across HR systems, spreadsheets, and tracking logs.
  • Lead onboarding and benefits education by running orientation and benefits sessions for new hires, covering retirement, insurance, flex benefits, 401(k), leave policies, and more.
  • Support employee relations by assisting with investigations, background checks, interview development, and leave situations such as FMLA and workers' compensation.
  • Determine benefit eligibility by navigating FMLA, workers' comp, and insurance qualifying events, applying state and federal guidelines with precision.
  • Contribute to employee engagement by supporting initiatives such as recognition programs, employee surveys, and internal communications.
  • Turn data into insight by preparing and analyzing reports on attendance, benefits, EEO, staffing, and safety for leadership decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate, well-organized employee files and documentation.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.
  • Qualifying full-time professional or paraprofessional human resources experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of four years.

Driver Standards

This position may involve driving responsibilities. Candidates must meet the following minimum driver qualifications:

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not include: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, or more than 4 moving violations

Pay

Monthly: $4,057.00 - $5,078.00
Annual: $48,684.00 - $60,936.00

Schedule

Full-time, standard 37.5-hour workweek.
