About the role

This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The primary purpose of this position is to exercise technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing tasks associated with EMS goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Reorganize work schedules efficiently to ensure timely accomplishment of work assignments.
  • Cooking duties include maintaining a clean and safe environment for patients, family members, and staff.
  • Coordinate work with supervisors of other services within the area of jurisdiction to avoid interruptions to patient care or other activities.
  • Ensure the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision.
  • Plan daily and weekly assignments, scheduling periodic work for areas of responsibility, considering personnel and equipment availability.
  • Train staff and ensure adherence to patient-centered care principles in terms of customer service.
  • Provide special direction to new employees, prepare them for individual assignments, procedures, and safety policies.
  • Schedule regular meetings with staff to inform them of new procedures or directives.
  • Keep supervisors informed of staff conditions, unusual occurrences, and matters requiring attention.
  • Keep subordinates updated on proper methods, procedures, and equipment usage; control supply and equipment use to achieve cost control within the unit.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and procedures, and conduct training classes on specific safety issues.
  • Approve leave requests for subordinates, counsel employees, and recommend disciplinary action to a higher-level supervisor.
  • Make formal appraisals of subordinates' work performance and conduct.
  • Coordinate activities with other services, including rearranging work schedules during remodeling, painting, and relocation of offices, clinics, or patient wards.

Physical Requirements

The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust, and debris.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations.
