About the Role
Plans, designs, and evaluates control, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, central utility, conveyance, and medical gas systems for the Medical Center. This role involves master and facility planning, project design, construction, commissioning, and plant operations with broad guidance from top hospital management. Coordinates construction timing to minimize disruption to essential services and inconvenience to patients and staff.
Responsibilities
- Develops, maintains, and promulgates engineering design standards for the Medical Center.
- Plans and programs the infrastructure and plant capital replacement program, both short-term (up to 5 years) and long-term (beyond 5 years).
- Supervises construction and inspects completed work for professional adequacy, service, maintainability, and conformance with construction documents and hospital standards.
- Monitors, inspects, and evaluates new construction and existing physical plant systems (HVAC, electrical power, emergency power, elevators, fire suppression, fire alarm, water distribution, sanitary waste, medical gases) for commissioning and recommissioning to design standards.
- Provides professional engineering consultative services, including feasibility studies, advice on new technology, and engineering solutions to cross-disciplinary problems.
- Offers engineering review and guidance for technical programs, ensuring compliance with published guidelines and good engineering practices.
- Oversees and directs the work of architects, industrial hygienists, engineers, and consultants on hospital facilities and construction projects.
- Stays current with regulatory guidelines (Federal, State, The Joint Commission) and hospital policies; maintains required records and documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering, or a related discipline (required).
- Advanced Degree in Engineering or a related discipline and a Registered Professional Engineer's license in Maryland (preferred).
- Eight years of professional experience in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering, including at least three years in the design and/or operation of large (minimum five million GSF) complex healthcare or biomedical research facilities.
Skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local electrical, mechanical standards, codes, designs, and regulations pertinent to hospital environments.
- Proficiency in computer system management, Computer Automated Design (CADD), LOTUS, and use of electrical/mechanical measuring and monitoring equipment.
- Ability to oversee, schedule, coordinate, and direct project activities, assign and monitor work, and evaluate performance.
- Physical ability to maneuver in utility work areas, crawl spaces, trenches, manholes, roofs, and climb ladders/scaffolding for inspections.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication and leadership skills for interacting with engineers, consulting firms, administration, and staff.
- Commitment to professional growth through in-service training, seminars, and external events to stay current in the field.
