Historic Preservation Project Manager

About the role

The Historic Preservation Carpentry Shop Manager supervises the repair and maintenance of all historically designated facilities at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and other Aramark Destinations accounts. This position directs trade workers, assigns daily tasks, and trains the work crew in safe and compliant work practices. The person in this position must be experienced in all areas of historic preservation, restoration, maintenance, and provide training on different phases of maintenance and construction.

Responsibilities

• Act as the subject matter expert in the preservation of cultural and historic designated facilities.
• Oversee daily management of historic preservation personnel, trades, and the Historic Preservation Center.
• Evaluate existing conditions of historic structures and building components; advise project teams on restoration scope of work, process, schedules, and associated costs.
• Develop detailed schedules of materials, budgets, and preservation means and methods to meet specific conditions of restoration projects.
• Prepare project statements, including presentation of methods and processes in National Park proposals and other supporting documentation; follow presentation standards set forth by the National Park Service.
• Provide awareness training and input on best practices pertaining to historical preservation to the Historical Preservation Team and property management staff.
• Coordinate with historical architects, contractors, and other preservation firms to ensure project compliance and completion of assigned restoration projects.
• Maintain recordkeeping as required by National, State, and public land agencies.
• Follow all company, Environmental, Health, and Safety Management Programs and policies.
• Maintain budgets, expenses, and maintenance logs; order supplies in accordance with prepared budget.
• Ensure a positive work environment centered on trust, open communication, and teamwork; facilitate problem solving and collaboration throughout the department.
• Implement National Park Service and company guidelines on preservation of historic structures and assets.
• Purchase and evaluate all low VOC content paints, stains, caulks, adhesives, and solvents.
• Maintain schedules associated with projects, workload, personnel, and coordination with larger renovation projects.
• Evaluate potential hazardous materials of historic components to be restored; ensure hazardous waste or bio-hazard materials are managed according to hazmat standards for removal and disposal.
• Effectively communicate department and position-specific expectations to team members; ensure updates on relevant news or needs of other departments.
• Communicate and collaborate with other departments and managers; attend staff meetings to provide updates and address potential problems.
• Strive to achieve and maintain a customer service-oriented department mentality; respond to customer complaints professionally.
• Manage department team members, create staff work schedules, and train employees in department standards, security procedures, and safe work methods.
• Mentor and coach staff members on developing and improving skills.
• Assist with the hiring process for vacant positions, including evaluating applications, performing interviews, and providing feedback.
• Enforce department standards, policies, and team member expectations; perform progressive discipline, coaching, and retraining as required.
• Know and enforce all company programs and policies, including Environmental, Health, Compliance, and Safety Management Programs.
• Assist with environmental instruction and design practices.
• Assist in other departments or assigned duties as needed.

Requirements

• Minimum high school diploma or G.E.D.
• Bachelor’s Degree in architecture, architectural history, and/or historic preservation, minimum one-year experience assessing historic buildings, or equivalent combination of education (related trade school), historic certification(s), and experience working on historic preservation projects.
• National Park Service HPTC certification desired but not required.
• Ability to obtain proper historic preservation certifications.
• Adept in assessing existing historic structures, components, and details to support project initiatives for preservation.
• Excellent carpentry and woodworking skills.
• Extensive knowledge of construction materials, species of wood, caulks, sealants, glass, and fastening materials.
• Extensive knowledge of carpentry and woodworking hand and power tools, equipment, and associated uses.
• Extensive knowledge of painting, staining, waterproofing means and methods for various materials for restoration of building components.
• Experience working with the National Park Service, SHPO, and familiarity with NPS/SHPO policies, processes, and documentation preferred.
• Understanding of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and familiarity with the Section 106 review process.
• Ability to read and understand architectural drawings and specifications.
• Experience as a journeyman and manager of a millwork/wood shop.
• Working knowledge of all construction means and methods (framing, drywall, painting, finish carpentry, etc.).
• Valid driver’s license.
• Working knowledge of codes and specifications.
• Computer skills including Microsoft Windows, Excel, and Word.
• Understanding of basic budget relationships (e.g., labor expense, cost breakdowns, purchasing).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk on paved, unpaved, uneven, and slippery surfaces for extended periods.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders frequently.
• Ability to remain balanced; stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, turn, push, pull, grasp, and reach down, forward, and overhead repetitively.
• Manual dexterity to use hand tools including screwdrivers, hammers, steel measuring tapes, utility knives, cordless drills, levels, pliers, wrenches, socket wrench sets, shovels, step ladders, etc., and power-operated tools.
• Ability to use general cleaning supplies and equipment.
• Visual acuity to recognize and complete repairs and maintenance.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and 70 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, larger moving vans, trucks, and vehicles to pick up and deliver materials (CDL license is NOT required).
• Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, humidity, and inclement weather.
