By joining the Department of Highways District 3 as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Simpson County, you’ll work as a team member on the highway maintenance crew, contributing to a safe, efficient, and environmentally sound transportation system that enhances the quality of life in Kentucky.
Responsibilities
- Operate equipment on road maintenance projects
- Operate a single axle dump truck with a snow plow
- Provide flagging for traffic control on maintenance projects
- Use a variety of hand and power tools for maintenance activities
- Learn the basics of surveying
- Learn to perform simple repairs and maintenance for equipment
- Stand for long hours, bend, lift, and operate equipment in a construction environment
Requirements
- High school graduate
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
- Must obtain a Class B commercial driver’s license within 12 months of employment
- Must complete First Aid, Snow and Ice Training, Traffic Control/Flagger, and OSHA 10 Certifications (or equivalent) within one year of employment
- Must maintain all required licensure, certification, or credentials for the length of employment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in highway or bridge maintenance
- Operation of equipment on a job site
- Maintenance and minor repair of equipment and tools
- Class A CDL driving experience (preferred but not required)
- Knowledge of surveying, construction plans, and roadway maintenance
Working Conditions
- Work at highway maintenance facilities, section offices, or work sites throughout the assigned area
- Exposure to risks inherent in road construction and large equipment operation
- Ability to work extended hours outdoors, including during inclement weather
- Physical demands include standing, bending, lifting, and operating equipment

Pay
$17.95 per hour.
