About the role

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet seeks a Highway Technician I to join the Campbell County Unit. This position involves performing intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations, including operating various types of equipment and performing technical tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Operating dump trucks with snow plow and salt spreader in winter months.
  • Operating intermediate equipment such as asphalt distributors, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro-seeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers, slope mowers, tandem trucks, and low pavers.
  • Performing technical tasks including installation of drainage structures, advanced carpentry work, concrete finishing, installation of complex signs, milling and patching pavement, and grading of slopes.
  • Serving as a quality assurance inspector for pipe laying, concrete coring, earthwork, asphalt laying, and guardrail installation, ensuring compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Flagger duties to provide traffic control.
  • Performing basic surveying activities.

Requirements

  • Four years of construction or highway maintenance experience.
  • Experience in operating intermediate equipment.
  • Experience in quality assurance for single activities of construction and maintenance work.
  • Experience in traffic control.
  • Experience in operating snow and ice plowing skills.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate.
  • Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology, or a related field to substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance.
  • Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering to substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance.
  • College coursework related to any of these fields to substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Skills

  • Operate intermediate and advanced equipment.
  • Perform technical tasks and quality assurance inspections.
  • Provide traffic control and basic surveying.

Pay

$21.73 - $24.97 hourly.

Schedule
