Highway Maintenance Worker 1/Trainee 1/Trainee 2 - (Regional Crews) - Region 8

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions.
• Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
• Operate plows during winter operations.
• Obtain the equipment certifications listed above.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years old.
• Pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination and drug test (cannabis use is tested and not permitted).
• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: Possess a Class D Driver License.
• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction.
• Ability to satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment (failure results in termination).
• Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Either satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience operating highway construction/maintenance equipment or other vehicles >26,000 GVWR with air brakes; possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT‑specified endorsements; hold two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications; and hold three specific certifications: heavy dump truck, one‑person plowing with single or double wing, and front‑end loader.

Pay

• Starting salary for Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: $57,465 (base $46,759 + geographic pay differential $10,706).
• Starting salary for Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: $59,475 (base $48,963 + geographic pay differential $10,512).
• Starting salary for Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $60,143 (base $49,743 + geographic pay differential $10,400).
• Depending on location, a Mid‑Hudson Adjustment of $2,000 or a Downstate Adjustment of $4,000 may also apply.
• For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the salary range). Promotion salaries are calculated per NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules, and negotiated union contracts.
