Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2/Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (Region 4)

About the role

The position is with the Regional Pavement Marking Crew in Region 4, involving pavement marking establishment and grinding, equipment maintenance and repair, potential summer overtime, winter snow/ice assignments based on seniority, and possible Incident Command System duties during emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Re-establish pavement markings
• Grind pavement markings
• Complete Traffic work requests
• Use Pavement Marking Equipment Tools
• Perform daily pre/post‑operation checks on Department equipment
• Assist with repairs of paint striping equipment, including preventive maintenance and winter overhaul
• Possible overtime associated with Pavement Marking Tasks during summer months
• Assigned to a Residency for winter snow and ice activity based on Regional Bidding/seniority process
• Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations

Requirements

• Must be 18 years old
• Pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination and drug test
• Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction
• Ability to satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of hire (failure results in termination)
• For Highway Maintenance Worker 1: satisfactory completion of Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 or one year experience operating highway construction/maintenance equipment or other vehicles >26,000 GVWR with air brakes
• Class A or B CDL with DOT‑specified endorsements
• Two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications
• Specific certifications: heavy dump truck, one‑person plowing with single or double wing, front‑end loader
• Complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification within first two weeks of employment (failure results in termination)
• All candidates must pass pre‑employment physical/medical exam and drug test; possible bypass if holding a valid CDL A/B and a current (

• Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis

Pay

Starting salary for Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: $53,818 (base $44,818 + geographic pay differential $9,000). Starting salary for Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $56,190 (base $47,190 + geographic pay differential $9,000). The salary range reflects the full range for this graded position; the hiring rate is the beginning of the range. Promotion salaries are calculated per NYS Office of the State Comptroller rules, Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll regulations, and union contracts.
