About the role

Individuals selected must be able to respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions, to be considered for this position. Overtime response and shift work are requirements for this job; therefore, use of vacation and personal leaves are subject to operational needs. Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
• Operate plows during winter operations and obtain required equipment certifications.
• Roadside maintenance, drainage maintenance, traffic control, and other assigned tasks during periods of fair weather.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years old and pass a physical/medical examination and drug test.
• Cannabis use is not permitted and will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license as follows:
  • Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: Class D Driver License.
  • Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no airbrake restriction. Candidates must satisfactorily operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment or face termination.
  • Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT-specified endorsements, plus two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications, including:
    • Heavy dump truck
    • One-person plowing with single or double wing
    • Front-end loader
    Must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification within the first two weeks of employment or face termination.
• Candidates with a valid CDL A or B and a current (less than 2 years old) CDL Medical Certificate (form MCSA 5876) may be eligible to bypass the pre-employment physical.
• Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Locations

DOT has locations in Saratoga, Clifton Park, and South Glens Falls in Saratoga County.

Pay

• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1: $52,996 (base salary $43,996 + $9,000 geographic pay differential).
• Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2: $55,199 (base salary $46,199 + $9,000 geographic pay differential).
• Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $57,575 (base salary $48,575 + $9,000 geographic pay differential).

The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position.
