Highway Maintenance with Snow & Ice - Transportation Generalist - Little Falls

Transportation Generalist position located in Little Falls, Minnesota. This is a full-time, year-round role within the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).

Responsibilities

In the summer, this position may focus on:

• Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance:
  • Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces
  • Maintains traffic barriers
  • Participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair
  • Maintains roadsides, installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair
• Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways
• Performs traffic control set-ups in high-volume traffic, ensuring compliance with the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual to ensure safety
• Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, and brush on roadside—planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming, and removal (includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding)

In the winter, this position may focus on:

• Snow & Ice Maintenance:
  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders, opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow, removes snow from rights-of-way or yards
  • Applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions
  • Removes frozen ice and material from culverts
  • Performs night or dawn patrols
• Prepares and inspects winter equipment, maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges, and sanders; cleans equipment post-storm
• Performs preseason snow route inspection and post-storm cleanup, including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways
• Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management

Schedule

This is a full-time, year-round position with seasonal schedules:

• Summer hours: Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (4-10's)
• Winter hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations. Work may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by weather and maintenance conditions. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to assigned work locations within one hour of being called.

Requirements

• One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
• OR successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts must be submitted for education substitution.
• Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement.
• Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Applicants who receive a contingent job offer will be required to pass a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test (Math: level 3 or higher; Reading: level 4 or higher). Previous passing scores may exempt applicants from retesting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.

Additional Requirements

• Successful candidate must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history check.
• Background investigation components may include: SEMA4 Records Check, Criminal History Check, Employment Reference Check, Education/License Verification, and Driver's License Check.
• This position is contingent upon having a valid Commercial Driver’s License, passing a Federal Department of Transportation pre-employment drug test (with negative results), and being subject to future random drug and alcohol testing.
• New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines (MDMA, MDA, and MDEA), and acetylmorphine (6-AM).
• Must be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Pay

Salary Range: $25.19 - $31.60 per hour; $52,596 - $65,980 annually.
