About the role
This position plays a crucial role in maintaining roadways, roadside areas, and facilities during all weather and seasonal conditions. The incumbent will be responsible for snow and ice control, road surface maintenance, and roadside maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces;
- Participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair;
- Maintains roadsides, installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair;
- Operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways;
- Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual;
- Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc. on roadside—planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal. Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding;
- Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols;
- Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
Requirements
- One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
- Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.
- A Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Skills
- Ability to operate heavy equipment and commercial vehicles.
- Knowledge of traffic control procedures and practices.
- Ability to maintain detailed records and reports.

Pay
$25.19 - $31.60 / hourly; $52,596 - $65,980 / annually
Schedule
This is a full-time year-round position, with seasonal schedules (summer hours & winter hours). Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations.
